Online Archive Updates

Since we opened the Online Archive beta to members we’ve been regularly adding new collections and features. Now you can explore mid-20th-century German lettering, flip through more issues of Emigre, and explore Caslon’s 1844 type specimen. New features include tap to zoom, type to filter, and keyboard navigation.

LFA and Astro Exhibition

Our second exhibition with Astro Studios will showcase the Archive’s collection of music-related material, from medieval notation to 21st-century gig posters. The opening reception this Thursday will feature music by nofi, Bay Area designer and DJ.

Salon Series 13

Next Thursday, we’ll explore the Archive's holdings of quintessentially 1990s design. Characterized by experimentation and bold graphic expression, the decade represented a major turning point in the field. We'll explore works by designers like April Greiman, Paula Scher, Wolfgang Weingart, and Neville Brody, as well as a selection of seminal periodicals like Ray Gun and FUSE.

Next month we welcome Lynne Yun, a type designer at Monotype NYC, who will will lead a workshop on designing flourishes. You will learn how to identify basic elements of well-executed flourishes, dissect what makes good flourishing pleasing to the eye, and combine the elements to create your own designs.

Letters: A Code System

Lynne Yun Lecture

At its root, the Latin alphabet is a code system, a series of symbols that create a visual pattern that resemble the spoken language. From Morse code to stenography, Lynne Yun will use her perspective as a lettering artist and type designer to explore various systems and illuminate a new perspective on Latin. Tickets are free.
