ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Images from three portfolios are featured in this exhibition:
 In The Shadow of Puppets
Words in Search of a Photograph
Covering

Inspiration for my image-making comes primarily from Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez,
a Latin American author who developed the novel literary genre, Magic Realism, as a basis for storytelling.
‘Magic Realism’ is defined as “making use of magic elements in order to create an alternative  to accepted reality.
Time exists in a kind of timeless fluidity.” While each series is different, this is the overarching concept
weaving them together. The images in this exhibition have no distinct psychological relationship;  yet the distortion –
obscurity and ambiguity evident in each photograph --  establishes the artistic intention.

Local photographer and retired Fine Arts educator Ken Lorenz has been taking and making pictures for over four decades. Lorenz began primarily as a black and white film photographer and continues to remain faithful to that medium. He uses a Leica film camera, and continues enjoys working in the darkroom, finding the wet chemical process more interesting and engaging than digital capture. Past influences that have shaped an extensive amount of his portfolios include photographers Diane Arbus, Duane Michals, Latin American writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.
