VBGA Annual General Meeting

This year the AGM will include the election of Board of Directors, review financial statements and conduct other VBGA related business. The Volunteer Awards ceremony will be a separate event scheduled later this spring. All volunteers will be notified of the event.

Bloedel Plant Profile

The Snowflake Aralia

One of the most remarkable trees in Bloedel is one of the tallest. It is also one of the least
noticed. At the far end of the bridge, on the inner side, there is a prickly pale brown trunk. The
trick here is to look up. The Snowflake aralia, or Snowflake tree, has huge leaves, 75 cm/2½ ft
across. They look like giant snowflakes cut out of green paper. The tree is native to India,
Southern China and South East Asia. It has many uses.

Free Hummingbird Banding Workshops for Members 

Participants will observe hummingbird banding and biological data collection in VanDusen’s Backyard Bird Garden. You might even get to hold a hummingbird!

This unique opportunity, presented by the Vancouver Avian Research Centre for VBGA members, has limited space and registration is required. This event is suitable for adults and children, and all children must be registered. Sessions will be cancelled if it is raining and registrants will be notified the day before the scheduled session.

Monthly sessions run from April to September. The next sessions are on April 6th and April 27th from 5pm-7pm. Register here »

Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest

A Talk and Book Launch with Linda Chalker-Scott

Monday, April 8, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in the VanDusen Visitor Centre Guide Classroom
Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Join us for a talk with acclaimed horticulturalist and award-winning author of The Informed Gardener, Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott, who will share information and tips for gardening with native plants of the Lower Mainland and Pacific Northwest. The master gardener will also answer questions from the audience and sign copies of her new book, Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest — an extensively revised and updated edition of Arthur R. Kruckeberg’s beloved tome. Books will be available for purchase through credit card or cash.

This event is free of charge, and we strongly encourage you to reserve your seat online ahead of time. Click here to register. A few walk-in spots will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Linda Chalker-Scott is associate professor of horticulture and extension specialist at Washington State University. Based in Seattle, she is a cohost of The Garden Professors blog and author of numerous books, including The Informed Gardener.

VanDusen Eggciting Easter Hop

Enjoy an unforgettable Easter experience with your kids 0 to 5 years at the VanDusen Eggciting Easter Hop! Kids can collect eggs near the maze area and receive a chocolate prize, hop along to fun music on the great lawn, take a photo with the Easter bunny and enjoy other eggciting activities at the garden. Please bring your own basket. Bunny ears and costumes are encouraged with prizes awarded for best costume during each session. We will have food trucks on-site so you can purchase tasty treats after the hunt. Tickets include entry to the entire 55-acre garden so make sure to enjoy a picturesque walk after the Easter activities.

Choose from four sessions daily at:
10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm
on April 19, 20, or 21.

Tickets go on sale on Tuesday, March 5 at 9am.

The VBGA offers a variety of nature based camps throughout the year including Spring Break, Pro-D, and Summer Camps for children aged 5-12 years old. Our summer camps are immensely popular and sell out quickly. Members receive a 10% discount on all camps and priority registration.
