Digital Inclusion Maturity Model Piloted in Chicago
|
|
On January 29-30, Smart Cities for All convened a team of experts to meet with the City of Chicago and pilot our Smart City Digital Inclusion Maturity Model.
Danielle DuMerer, CIO & Commissioner of the Department of Innovation & Technology at the City of Chicago, and Karen Tamley, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities organized a series of working sessions with leaders from numerous city departments and agencies. Together we used the Digital Inclusion Maturity Model tool to explore how Chicago is leveraging its technology deployments and smart programs to support the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The Smart Cities for All team for this pilot with the City of Chicago included Megan Lawrence, Accessibility Technical Evangelist, Microsoft; Aaron Bangor, Lead Accessible Technology Architect, AT&T; Denise Riedl, Ecosystem Development Manager, City Tech Collaborative; James Thurston, Vice President for Global Strategy and Development, G3ict, and Yulia Sarviro, Senior Project Manager for Smart Cities for All Initiative, G3ict.

The Smart City Digital Inclusion Maturity Model tool helps cities evaluate the current state of ICT accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities in city digital and smart services. Focused on a broad range of functions important to all cities, such as communications, procurement, training, and technology standards, it defines key performance indicators and metrics to support advancing accessibility and digital inclusion in a smart city context. The tool’s five levels of maturity for digital inclusion guide cities in assessing and tracking their progress across multiple smart city dimensions, e.g. vision, culture, process, technology, and data.
As the next step following this site visit, Smart Cities for All will provide the City of Chicago with two outputs: a set of scores for where Chicago falls today across the Maturity Model dimensions and sub-dimensions and a roadmap on how to advance to the next levels of maturity and strengthen the city’s commitment to being both smarter and more inclusive.
In the coming days, G3ict will announce new pilot cities for the Smart City Digital Inclusion Model.

Smart Cities Could be Lousy for Persons
with Disabilities
Cities sometimes fail to make sure the technologies they are adopting are accessible to everyone, including persons with disabilities. The Smart Cities for All initiative by G3ict and World Enabled, is changing that by working with cities worldwide to remove barriers to access and inclusion by leveraging technology.

ICT Accessibility for Smart Cities for Everyone
to Consider
According to a survey conducted by Smart Cities for All, only 44% of the Smart City projects currently take into consideration ICT Accessibility. Accessibility of ICTs in Smart Cities can be ensured by building public-private partnerships and reducing the gap between government policy and citizen's perception.

James Thurston, G3ict Vice President and SC4A Managing Director, will be presenting a keynote at the Zero Project Conference 2019 along with other high-level representatives. The Conference will focus on Independent Living and Political Participation.

On March 8th at 11:00 AM, Smart Cities for All will lead a discussion at SxSW of global leaders from government, industry, and civil society. James Thurston will join Karen Tamley, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, City of Chicago, Megan Lawrence, Accessibility Technical Evangelist, Microsoft, and Monterrey Tech University of Mexico to share strategies and tools that can help address barriers to digital inclusion in cities around the world.
