D1.jobs: New opportunities below at UC Irvine, Wyoming & Penn State. Post your team openings where thousands of administrators start their days. Click here to get started.
The NCAA steps up to certify June hoops events for high schools not part of the National Federation of State High School Associations. As you know, a couple of state systems have decided not to hold events in June due to the new recruiting regulations. In order to be approved, the schools & coaches involved must be in good standing with the host association, pass background checks, have been in existence for more than one year & prospective student-athletes must be eligible with their high school squads. NCAA SVP for Basketball Gavitt: "Our members made clear that this needed to be an inclusive process so that eventually as many players and schools as possible have the opportunity to participate. This step opens that door wider and provides the foundation to grow June over time into a beneficial period to help the next generation of college basketball players develop their skills and be recognized by coaches in a positive, educational environment." (link)
Yahoo's Forde, Thamel & Wetzel get perspective on what April's MBB-FBI developments could bring as former Adidas staffer Code & former agency runner Dawkins go on trial. Notable Dentons law firm partner Hill Jr.: "In some ways, in the first trial, we skipped to the end of the movie. Here, with the help of coaches who pled guilty and documents and evidence that allegedly proves the allegations, the jury is going to be taken through literally the entire story from the opening scene to the end. [...] Because of the way the defense strategies are being forecasted, you’re still going to have different evidence that goes to the jury and is more detailed. I think that has the potential for a lot of new information coming out that wasn’t in the indictment." Dawkins' attorney: "We’re going to aggressively pursue witnesses we deem relevant." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd digs in on more analysis of the Pac-12's potential plan to sell off a stake of its revenue-generating verticals for a big sum that could be banked & distributed now. Here's what I found interesting: An unnamed Wall Street executive on the plan, "I think the most interesting and impactful question to ask … is what is the exit strategy? What is the liquidity event going to be because private equity guys are going to get their money back. [...] If [Scott] thinks he's going to get top dollar for the piece of the business that he's selling, that's probably not going to happen. They're going to have to give up more than 10 percent [at a] $500 million valuation." Former Oregon AD Kilkenny says he wants to be on Scott's side of the table during a media rights negotiations, points to others around the conference who need to "do a better job of fundraising, quite frankly, instead of sitting around complaining about the conference waving a magic wand and solving their problems." As for Scott, he believes the down turn for his FB & MBB portfolios is simply part of the cyclical nature of the business. Dodd describes the Pac-12 & Pac-12 Networks offices, derided for their cost, as pretty normal. More. (link)
Rarely do you see a former HC go after a successor, but here we are after Southern Illinois AD Kill had this to say about current Minnesota FB HC Fleck in a radio interview yesterday, "When he went into Minnesota and treated the people the way he treated my guys, and telling them he had to go in and completely change the culture, and it was a bad culture and bad people. You know, he made it sound like we didn’t know what we were doing. And I took it personal. You just don’t treat people that have been with you and helped your career, and you don’t even talk to them once you get the job. […] Do I still root for the Gophers? I do. Do I enjoy him running up and down the sidelines? No. Do I think that he’s about the players? No. He’s about himself." Notably, Fleck was an AC for Kill at Northern Illinois. (link)
Texas A&M AD Woodward believes the biggest challenge for his staff & him is building upon success on the field & in the facilities race, "We’re cannibalizing our own product, which is our live gate. We’ve got to figure out how to continue to make that product even better. Frankly, we’re very lucky here in Aggieland because you can’t get that feeling of sawing varsity’s horns off in your living room by yourself, but you can get it at Kyle Field. And that’s the difference, and I think that’s what’s going to continue to be what’s good moving forward." Woodward indicates a renewal of the FB rivalry with Texas will likely happen at some point, but there's a ton of moving parts to figure out. (link)
Here's a potential problem, at least for some FB student-athletes, there may not be enough scholarship spots available for the Fall competition season compared to the number who are currently in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Sports Illustrated's Staples: "...which means those coaches with scholarships can afford to be choosy and grab only players who either can fill an immediate need or who project as future stars with a little seasoning. Everybody else? They can just leave them in the portal." Staples continues by noting the need for interested student-athlete to do their homework and, in some cases, use an intermediary to gauge other opportunities before going into the portal (sounds like the old system, no?). (link)
Facilities: Iowa State may widen the concourse and expand concessions options at Hilton Coliseum. Estimated $25M project will also address aging mechanical system and maintenance issues in two elevators. (link); The newest version of the state's capital construction bill eliminated the $15M originally appropriated for renovations of War Memorial Stadium's west stands and a new pool for Wyoming's Swimming & Diving teams. (link); Memphis files an $8.8M building permit to build an indoor FB practice facility, which is phase 2 of the indoor facility project and should begin upon completion of phase 1 in April. (link); Marshall will have an official announcement tomorrow, but all signs point toward a new baseball stadium for the Thundering Herd becoming a reality. (link); Rice athletic brass proposed plans for an inflatable dome to be located in the infield of the bike track behind Rice Stadium. Estimated $3M cost to build the dome. (link); Oklahoma State Baseball HC Holliday gives a tour of the $60M new O'Brate Stadium, which is still in the early stages of construction. Photos included. (link); The new $1.8M Jacksonville Lacrosse Center is officially open for business. 8,600 square feet of office space, conference room, theater style film room, locker rooms and two large outdoor patios. Stellar constructed it and PQH Group designed it. (link); UConn intends to play all home soccer games at the new Morrone Stadium once construction is complete in 2020. (link)
Michigan FB is venturing out again. This time to South Africa in May. No word yet on how the trip will be funded. (link); The annual Georgia-Auburn FB tilt reportedly moving from November to October. (link); If you want to experience Duke-North Carolina MBB tonight in Durham, it's going to cost a pretty penny. As of last night the cheapest ticket on the secondary market was $2,500. (link)
presented by Anthony Travel
"It has to be a priority. Not only do you want to hire the best person and most qualified, but you want to have a really diverse candidate pool, and you have to be ultra-committed to that. That may mean making some additional phone calls. That may mean working a little bit harder to find those candidates. If you think you’re going to find the right person by just letting people apply for the opening, then you’re mistaken. You have to actively recruit and educate yourself on the market and who’s out there." That's Northwestern AD Phillips as he's recognized by the NCAA as a Champion of Diversity & Inclusion. Phillips was nominated by his staff & Deputy AD/CFO White remarks, "With Phillips at the helm, Northwestern focuses on having diverse candidate pools for each and every open position, and perhaps places a greater emphasis on diverse candidate pools for senior and executive staff position." (link)
Along the same lines, though from a different angle, The Athletic's O'Neil catches up with some minority MBB HCs on hiring trends. Pitt HC Capel points to former Arkansas leader Richardson's career arch, "All of us looked up to him, to Coach Chaney and Coach Thompson. You sit here and you see he never got another chance and you know what? You get an opportunity you better just shut up. How can you not?" Though Capel & others see continued challenges for their peers rising to the HC chair, many of student-athletes of the sport are more comfortable than ever as activists in the spotlight. Florida State HC Hamilton: "As far back as Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson, the successful athletes who had security and longevity have always been able to speak for the people they represent." More, including comments from legendary Temple HC Chaney, former Georgetown/Princeton HC Thompson III & others. (link)
Iowa State FB HC Campbell says the job of a HC is to "find the pulse of a team or game" to make the right decisions for success. Campbell reflects on the recruiting & interview process by Cyclones AD Pollard, "He was smart. He brought my wife along, which was really good. I thought that was almost, he’s going to meet her for 20 minutes. Then he kept her with us the whole time and literally our conversation had so little to do with football and so much to do with life and leadership and doing things the right way. I felt like, man, for me it was meeting the leadership of this university and then meeting knowing and having a good feel for the people really cared." Campbell also points to having played in Ames with his Toledo team & the vibe was better than the likes of Florida & Missouri, "It’s why I love it here. It literally takes all of us here to be successful, and I’m not naive to that. It’s not just about me, it’s not about our players, it’s not just about our staff. It takes all of us." More. (link)
Embattled Nebraska MBB HC Miles with some interesting context on his situation during a podcast interview with Stadium's Goodman. Miles: "A veteran coach told me that moved around a whole bunch is that coach, it's five and die. And I said, 'What does that mean?' Yeah, it was, yeah, after five years, they just, they, you know, they start they start killing you, for one reason or another. It starts out that you can't win and then when you start winning there, okay. And then if you don't win enough, it's the way you're winning when you do win and you know and so you lose a little bit of your equity as you go through these jobs especially in the spaces we live today and and that's okay." Miles believes he compromised his standards a bit two years ago when he allowed a student-athlete back on the team who had quit, "I think I made a mistake and so at the end of the day you know the one thing you can't do is compromise your principles." (link)
Fun read from The Athletic's O'Neil on the competition & camaraderie between MBB HCs in the old Big East.  Luckily, the league was led by legendary Commish Gavitt. Syracuse HC Boeheim: "He was the only man John (Thompson) listened to in the history of the league, Georgetown or the NCAA. But we all did. I can’t overstate the strength he brought to that table." Former Seton Hall HC Carlesimo: "Dave somehow knocked us all with a hammer in the back of our heads, and essentially told us, 'He might be an asshole, but he’s our asshole.' It was us against the other conferences." Again, more. (link)
More Personnel: Seven months into the job, UCF Prez Whittaker submits his resignation in the wake of state funds being misused before he took over. Whittaker: "Despite my work to find and solve these problems, it has been made clear to me that for UCF to succeed with our state leaders in the future, new leadership is required." (link, link); Could former Louisville MBB HC Pitino land at UNLV? Former Ohio State HC Matta's name is also one on the reported "short list," should the Rebs make a HC change. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz with MBB HC bonus updates: VCU boss Rhoades earned $20K for the Rams 20th win, Kansas State's Weber $100K for the Wildcats 10th Big 12 win, and Cincinnati's Cronin $10K for 21st win of the season. (link); USA Gymnastics hires NBA VP Leung as the new Prez/CEO. The former Michigan student-athlete starts March 8. (link)
New Mexico must reinstate Men's Soccer, Men's & Women's Ski, as well as Beach Volleyball, if it wants $4.6M - significantly more than it had been asking for - from the state as part of a $7B budget proposal. Lobos AD Nuñez: "The contingencies imposed by the language in (the bill) put UNM Athletics in a critically precarious financial position, and seriously challenges our efforts to create a successful and efficient department capable of supporting our student-athletes’ well-being, training and overall success. The additional $2M that is allocated with the contingency to reinstate the cut sports does not address the actual request we have made for $1.5M for addressing current needs." UNM Prez Stokes: "We have tremendous needs at UNM, very important priorities and it would be hard for me to make the case that reinstating a sport is a top priority for the University of New Mexico." (link)
Arkansas AD Yurachek, Arkansas State's Mohajir, Little Rock's Conque & Pine Bluff's Hines all oppose legalized sports gambling in the state. In a joint letter, "No one can deny the tremendous financial and reputational harm that a sports betting scandal would cause to our state universities and student athletes, along with millions of fans, alumni and donors who support them. The loss of confidence in the integrity of our events (and the State’s gaming licensees) would be irreparable." (link); Accordingly, you'll probably want to give this a read as ESPN's Eden rolls out a piece that took two years to complete on how former NBA referee Donaghy fixed games. Long read. Question: Does legalized sports gambling make it more or less likely a rouge player like Donaghy could fix games? (link)
"In conversations with our current and past season ticket holders, the new tax laws were the biggest factor in diminished purchases of season tickets this season. It has had a significant impact on college athletic programs across the nation." That's Louisville Senior Assoc. AD Klein in a WDRB piece on the micro & macro impacts of the new federal tax code. Local tax accountant Edelen: "It's hurting the University of Louisville. It's hurting the University of Kentucky. It's hurting every college throughout the country." (link)
Kennesaw State adopts athletics' intertwined "KS" as the university's official mark. Straight from the release, "The new logo capitalizes on the popularity of the athletics mark and adds the name of the University to create one unified logo." First university rebrand in 20 years. (link)
Deals: FloSports will live stream the 2019 Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling and Softball Championships. (link); The Northeast Conference partners with Forward Progress Athletic Consulting in a four-year pact that will provide academic consulting services to all member institutions to "prepare them for the upcoming Academic-Based Revenue Distribution, with a focus on improving their performance under NCAA academic metrics." The ASUN and Horizon Leagues have previously announced partnerships with Forward Progress, as well. (link); Syracuse Men's LAX teams up with Athlete Network to launch the Syracuse Lacrosse Alumni Network to "engage all current and former 'Cuse lacrosse athletes with available services and resources." (link)
Also Noticed: The latest MBB comparative rankings are here. Updated every afternoon. (link); As you would expect, both Washington & Washington State oppose legislation introduced to state leadership that could further compensate student-athletes. (link); NHL Carolina Hurricanes owner Dundon named the chairman of the Alliance of American Football. Dundon also invested $250M into the AAF. The league says it wasn't an emergency investment & more of a long-term play. (link, link); New Mexico State's Aggie Athletic Club reached 1,000 members for the first time, up from the 671 members of the 2014-15 season and 783 last year. Projected cash revenue from those memberships is $650K. (link); West Virginia adds Towson to its 2022 home FB schedule. $500K guarantee for the Tigers. (link); Western Michigan adds FB home-and-homes with Pittsburgh and San Jose in 2021 and 2022. (link)
