Nigerian fintech startup OyaPay shuts down operations. It is yet another sad story for the Nigerian tech community as one of its very promising startups which had a very interesting approach to the problems in the Nigerian financial tech landscape, shut down operations last week.
The recent shut down of Nigerian startups is becoming alarming. However, reports have it that OyaPay’s shutdown was due to family issues.
Georges Mpoudi’s Diamond Business Technologies officially launched Cowork Africa in Douala on February 13, 2019. The "Cowork.Africa" center provides a co-working space, coupled with a tech hub that allows businesses of all sizes, including Very Small Enterprises, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and large companies, to have a space of meeting and productivity aligned with the standards of the modern companies.
By this initiative, the city of Douala becomes the first city of Cameroon to have a modern digital co-working center with international standards.
Nigeria’s Co-creation Hub (CcHub) has launched the CcHub Design Lab in Kigali, Rwanda. The hub provides a space for product designers, engineers, scientists, and stakeholders to explore the application of emerging technologies to solve Africa’s public health, education, governance, and private sector challenges.
This continues CcHub’s mandate of accelerating the application of social capital and technology for economic prosperity in Africa; and marks the first expansion of the organization outside of its home country, Nigeria.
Kenyan hardware and connectivity startup BRCK has announced its acquisition of local public WiFi provider Surf. This makes BRCK one of the largest public WiFi networks in Sub-Saharan Africa. The company will now serve a community of 500,000 users a month and further its mission of “connecting Africa to the Internet”.
