Spring is in sight.

Thanks to Reiko and Karen, both solid work share CSA members, we were able to get some tunnel work and planting done on the farm. They also helped Ben with most of the harvest for the week, so Ben could spend his time finishing up the crop plans and seed orders. He's working on the actual seed orders as I type. Poor guy was almost finished when the computer died. He thought it was plugged in, but it was loose. I hope he didn't lose anything in the carts. We order from a number of sources including Wild Garden Seed, Wild Boar Farms, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Seeds from Italy, Kitazawa Seed Co., Territorial Seed Co., Seed Savers Exchange and more! I want you to know we take great pride in working with quality seeds and varieties. We think long and hard about what y'all tell us you like and want more of in your CSA shares and we do our best to provide those things, within our own limits and restraints. For example, many of you have expressed a desire to add more and more fruit. And we get it. We were thrilled to have upped our fruit game when we went from strawberries and melons at the old farm to adding blueberries, apples, and pears practically instantly. We are so blessed to have this orchard that was planted with love and intention by Bill Dow. We have plans to grow our fruit production by leaps and bounds, but time and money are big constraints. We will plant blackberries this year and hope to be able to have them for CSA by 2020. We will also add black raspberries, elderberries, mulberries, paw paws, and various nut trees to the mix. An ecologically diverse farm makes for a healthy farm. And full and happy bellies!

Cook Your CSA Class by Farmbelly
Michelle Aronson at Farmbelly and IGHF are partnering to offer a Cook Your CSA class on the farm March 30th. The class will be held outdoors and we will have the barn for cover should the weather require it. Here's the description from the Eventbrite page

In this fun and engaging workshop in collaboration with In Good Heart Farm, you'll learn tangible tools, tips, and recipes for cooking with your seasonal CSA bounty. Local chef & farmer Michelle Aronson, of Farmbelly, will guide you through the following topics:

  • Proper storage methods for fresh produce
  • Recipes + tips for "root to stem" cooking with various vegetables, fruits and herbs
  • Knife Skills demonstration
  • Demonstration of key culinary techniques (such as roasting, blanching, sauteeing, pickling and fermenting)
  • HANDS-ON ACTIVITY: Homemade Vinaigrettes

This class is part demonstration and part hands-on – everyone will get to make their own customized vinaigrette to enjoy with a beautiful salad chock full of greens for In Good Heart Farm. Immediately following the workshop, you're welcome to stick around for a walking tour of In Good Heart Farm led by Patricia and Ben.

Your ticket includes farm fresh snacks to enjoy throughout the class, a jar of homemade vinaigrette, and a detailed packet featuring helpful recipes and tips. If you have any questions about this workshop, please email michelle@farmbelly.com.

Michelle assures me this class is a good one for newbies and old timers to CSA alike. The vinaigrettes she offers will run the gamut and may serve as inspiration to seasoned home cooks. The class is $40 and class size will be limited to 20 people and IGHF members have first dibs to sign up. I hope a bunch of CSA members do sign up, but we will also open up the class to the public, so feel free to share with your friends who might be interested in something like this.
