For some, giving is receiving!

Dear friends,

On a recent trip to deliver classroom supplies to one of our instructors, I had a conversation that I’ll never forget. As I was driving to her home, I was thinking what a blessing she has been to Pure and the many students she has seen. Evelyn Houser was an ultrasonographer in an OB/GYN office and is so knowledgeable about the topics we teach and is one of our experts in the medical arena we can go to with any questions regarding pregnancies or STD’s when developing our curriculum.

When I got to her home, she began to tell me about a recent doctor visit. I knew she had been diagnosed with MS in 1996 and she was always being monitored by her doctors. She shared the following story with me:

“MS is an autoimmune disease where your own immune system is attacking the covering of the nerves in the brain and spinal column.  For years I continued to have more scars (sclerosis) where the nerve covering had been attacked as seen on the MRI.  Beginning in 2000, the MRI results added statements about brain atrophy more than expected for my age.  Atrophy meant my brain was shrinking.  My doctor was a speaker at an MS meeting, and he said he would rather be in a wheelchair than have brain atrophy.  So, I started doing crossword puzzles and Luminosity Brain Games, but the MRI reports still commented about atrophy.  In 2009 my MRI reported that the sclerosis was stable, but still had more atrophy than expected.

In 2014, I began instructing for Pure. At the time, it seemed a little overwhelming. So much to learn, and new information was the hardest for me to remember. However, I am so thankful that I worked at it for so many reasons. One of those reasons is my brain has stopped shrinking. The MRI never mentions atrophy anymore!!!!!  Thank you Pure!”

Another part of Evelyn’s story that you may not know unless you were one of her students in the classroom is that she not only has the medical history to back up the facts she shares with the students, but she has a personal story of her own that she shares in a very vulnerable way.

Evelyn experienced domestic and emotional abuse in an unhealthy dating relationship that led to her first marriage and knows first hand what it’s like to let go of your goals and dreams. The students are drawn in as she shares such a personal story to help them understand the dynamics of an unhealthy relationship. One student even commented, “She didn’t have to tell us her story, but I’m so thankful she did.”

Over the last five years that Evelyn has been an instructor with Pure we have witnessed her in times of adversity, and she is an overcomer on so many levels. Two years ago, she lost the love of her life, her second husband Tom, where she found true love and joy and the understanding of what a healthy relationship consisted of. Despite her grief, she carried on with her passion to reach students and help them avoid the consequences of unhealthy relationships. We are so thankful that she is part of our team and devotes her time and energy to make a difference in young people’s lives. We are confident that whatever comes her way, she will succeed.

There are two kinds of people: one who will use their circumstances to give up, and one who will use their circumstances to give back.

Thank you, Evelyn, for making the decision to give back and for all you do for Pure and the students.

Be blessed,

Shari McCutcheon

Pure In the Community

New Community Partnership

We are excited to announce our newest community partnership with S.O.A.R. (Survivors Overcoming Abuse Restored).  SOAR is a place where women who have been sexually abused as children can find help and healing. They provide a safe place where recovered women can give support to those just starting their journey. Our Solutions Child Abuse Prevention Program is a great partnership with this group in our efforts to eliminate childhood sexual abuse.

Pure Board of Trustees Mary & Jim Munford and Shari McCutcheon enjoy the evening supporting SOAR at its recent Healing Hearts Banquet.

County Wide Prevention Efforts

Our staff attended a recent Clark County CARES prevention meeting at Ivy Tech as part of the Clark County CARES Fact Week to learn more about prevention efforts in Clark County as they relate to drug issues. Clark County Health Officer Dr. Yazel shared some encouraging statistics for Clark County and many other prevention agencies were in the room sharing what other prevention efforts were being offered to students through the schools and outside organizations. It was very encouraging to hear counselors and educators who have incorporated Pure programs in their schools to praise our efforts in helping students understand their value and encourage healthy habits and relationships.

Clark County Health Officer Dr. Eric Yazel shares the work that has been done, and continues to be done, in Clark County to combat drug use and overdose.

Welcome New & Returning Instructors

Solutions K-2 will be presented in March and April to every Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade class in the Greater Clark County Schools. Our volunteers are trained and ready to go with all the necessary supplies to present this program. Thank you to all of our staff, volunteers and donors who are making this program possible.

Preparing 10 sets of props, volunteer training materials, and the purchases of all of this has required "all hands on deck" at many times to meet our deadlines to launch and deliver this new program.

Volunteer Trainings

This month we have added several new volunteer instructors to help keep up with the demand. From our Solutions Elementary program to our SRA middle and high school programs, we trained 15 instructors this month on new curriculum. Whether they have come on board as a first-time instructor, or adding another grade to their repertoire, this increases our ability to reach the student request need.

Trainings are flexible and held during day or evening hours. If you have an interest in being trained on any of our curriculum, let us know and we can add you to the list for the next training.

Sandy Sorrells trains returning instructors Dennis Shireman and Ann Carruthers and
new instructor Rhonda Brawner on the MS2 Curriculum (7th Grade).
