What is Mid-Century Modern in California and the U.S.?
SPEAKER: PIERLUIGI SERRAINO
Friday, March 1, 2019
TIME: 6:00 - 8:00pm
LOCATION: Golden Bough Carmel

8th Ave & Monte Verde St, Carmel
PRICE: $25 (non-members)
This talk spells out the architectural themes that distinguish the Mid-Century Modern period from the large trajectory of Modernism. A definite set of attributes gives distinct character to the architecture of this time span, with variations across the country that will be pointed out for the audience. California Modernism is a firm point in the annals of Modern Architecture. Here the focus is on the geographical areas within the Golden State that have the highest concentration of MCM projects, a great many of them lasting masterpieces revered to this date. An overview of the key architects in various parts of California will give the audience a sense of the scope of this phenomenon.

These five deliveries articulate the broad themes of the period and their implementation in the Monterey Bay, a region filled with masterworks from this period. The heritage industry, the real estate market values, the design taste, the reappearance of particular architectural experiences even with novel forms, are some of the most visible areas of impact of this historical period on our time. This series can be of interest to architects, general contractors dealing with adaptive re-use, real estate agents and brokers, people interested in architecture at large, and building and planning officials.
