CORE Organic Newsletter, February 2019

Dear reader,

This year, the CORE Organic Programme celebrates a 15 Year Anniversary! It is an important landmark resulting from a lasting cooperation of the CORE Organic funding institutions, stakeholder partners and the researchers committed towards coordination and scientific excellence of European transnational research in organic food and farming systems. The partners will further share relevant scientific achievements during this year - and we thank our CORE Organic readers community for your continuous interest!

The February issue of our newsletter contains knowledge and recommendations from the 'Kick-off CORE Organic Cofund Research Seminar' and on-going research projects dealing with plant production systems and animal husbandry.

Enjoy reading!

Kind regards CORE Organic Coordinator,

Rearing calves with adult dairy cows: advantages and constraints

Innovative calf rearing dairy systems based on close relationships between young and adult cows are more and more implemented by French dairy farmers. Focus on these farmers’ experience indicates that these techniques can be easily and widely adopted.

Organic pig producers across EU set the scene for research to improve animal welfare and reduce ammonia emission

The CORE Organic Cofund project POWER asks organic pig producers in eight European countries for innovative ideas to test; the aim is to improve animal welfare and reduce ammonia emissions from outdoor runs in organic housing systems for growing pigs.

Sustainable orchard and vineyard intensification – by an agro-ecological approach

The effort to increase the sustainability of agricultural practices, by promoting the biodiversity of the ecosystems, is nowadays wide spreading. However, a further challenge is represented by the move from efforts only to increase biodiversity to targeted management of diversity within the ecological communities.

Nitrogen rich waste and by-product used as organic fertilizers

One of the main postulates of the circular economy is to minimize the waste production in favor of the materials re-use. One good example of that is given by the upcycling of nitrogen rich biomasses that can be used as fertilizers.
