This is an urgent alert from the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW

Dangerous conditions Sat and Sun - Sydney to QLD border
The NSW coast is going to be affected by two major weather systems over coming days. Winds and seas in the north increase today and through the weekend due to the presence of Tropical Cyclone Oma in the region. And a strengthening high pressure system to the west of Tasmania will move slowly east over the next couple of days, establishing south to southeasterly winds through most coastal areas.

On Saturday and Sunday, the coast from Sydney all the way to the QLD border will be affected by large and powerful surf conditions that are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

On the Byron and Coffs coasts expect seas of up to 6 metres and easterly and south easterly swells of 5 metres. Further south seas are up to 3 metres and swells of 2.5 to 4 metres.

Be careful to check forecasts and local conditions before you head out. Check local forecasts on the BOM website at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml

Always tell someone where you are going and when you plan on coming back. If the rock platform is wet ask yourself 'why is it wet?' then watch the ocean for waves and swells for at least 20 minutes. Always fish with a friend, wear proper rockfishing footwear, light warm high visibilty clothing, and wear a life jacket in case you get washed in.

Stay safe, always watch the local conditions before fishing and never turn your back on the ocean.
