DBS NEWSLETTER

15th February 2019

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

This week we were visited by Carole Denny, the School Support and Evaluation Officer for the Council of International Schools. She was very grateful to the members of the school community who gave up their time to speak to her, and it was a most productive visit. This is part of our membership process for CIS, and I will update you when I can.

As ever, we have had numerous events on this week. On Monday, we were delighted to be able to welcome Tom Vachiramom, who gave the Entrepreneurship Talk on Artificial Intelligence. There was a very well attended Open Day on Tuesday. Anna Ghazal’s Year 4 Kite Class Assembly was a wonderful presentation on the subject of sound.

We have learnt about individual student successes this week, including that of Baibua, in Year 6, at the Asian Science and Mathematics Olympiad; and Nammon, in Year 7, at the Kasetsart Open 2019 Archery Championship.

It was good to see many of you at the Year 1 and 2, Year 3 and 4, EY2 Mandarin and Thai Parent Teacher Meetings this week.

Finally, we have just launched the DBS Summer School starting in July, which will be run predominantly by DBS academic staff, led by Ms Lovatt and Mr Kliber, so please have a look at what will be on offer.

I hope you have a fantastic half term break, and I look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday 25th February.

Lisa joins me in sending you our very best wishes,

Mark McVeigh

Vast numbers of students, across all ages at DBS, today showcased their talents, hoping to be selected for Denla's Got Talent (DGT), that will be held on Friday 29th March. The students served up a vast array of performances ranging from Hula Hooping; Hoverboard dancing; DJing; telling jokes; demonstrating their football prowess; fast drawing and many, many more. Every act showed confidence, dedication, enjoyment and above all TALENT!  Early indications promise that Denla's Got Talent will be an unmissable spectacle and the hottest ticket in town!
Another showcase of student talent at 'Performance Time' last week at DBS!

The children in the EY1 Jellyfish class made beautiful Valentines Cards for their families. They all worked hard to personalize their cards, making each one different and signing their names inside.

The Y4 Kite class had a fantastic time planning, creating, rehearsing and performing their assembly, which took place on Thursday this week. The children collaborated and thought about how they could include their learning and demonstrated some exciting science experiments! The Kite class sang a catchy song to help us remember facts about sound and even used their drama skills to perform a short play. We are all very proud of you, well done Kites!

In History this week, the Y8's have been learning all about Henry VIII's six wives! They explored the positive and negative attributes of each individual, before stepping into the shoes of the characters in a drama activity.

Y1 - Y2 Parent Coffee Morning

Join Mrs Skinner and Mrs Fineman for the Year 1 and 2 coffee morning on Tuesday 26th February where they will share how we are using Talk for Writing strategies in Pre Prep.

EY Music Showcase and Sharing Sessions

On Thursday 28th February and Friday 1st March, Miss Ing is opening the doors for EY parents to come and join in with their child's music lesson to find out more about how their child learns Music at DBS. Look out for the email sign up. We hope that you are able to join us.

Carole Denny, the School Support and Evaluation Officer for the Council of International Schools (CIS), addresses DBS staff as part of the membership process.

Medication Administration at DBS

If your child requires medication during the school day, please ensure that you hand the labelled medication to the school nurse. The only personnel allowed to administer medication at DBS are the school nurses and on school trips, a designated First aider.
