March 2019 - News and Updates

March 5th is Pączki Day

"Tłusty Czwartek" or "Fat Thursday" was celebrated in Poland last week!  While the practice of Pączki Day is traditionally observed the day before Ash Wednesday in the United States, in Poland, pączki sales are the highest on Tłusty Czwartek or the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. This day marks the start of the final week of the pre-Lenten celebrations.
In St Louis area we recommend Helfer's Pastries and Deli Cafe located 380 St Ferdinand St, Florissant, MO 63031. Catch them while they last until March 5th.

Bridging Urban America: The Story of Ralph Modjeski

St. Louis Screening of Documentary Film

with special guests: Basia + Leonard Myszynski

Bridging Urban America: The Story of Ralph Modjeski is a documentary about one of America’s greatest bridge designers and pioneer of the suspension bridges. From 1896 to 1936, Ralph Modjeski – a Polish-born and Paris-educated civil engineer – designed and built over 40 bridges, most of which are still in use today. Bridging Urban America details the construction of his most iconic projects, including the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin Bridge. In his innovative designs, Modjeski brilliantly combined science with art and significantly contributed to the urbanization of modern America.

Join the Conversation

Poland is a unique, beautiful place with a rich, complicated history and a vibrant, modern culture. It is also a place of indescribable tragedies resulting from both external and internal circumstances.   We support open discussion on a variety of topics about the Polish heritage, history, culture an current affairs with an open mind, free of prejudice or bigotry.  All comments are welcome as long as they are free of hate or disrespect. The discussion should be civil and constructive. We believe that an honest, well-balanced conversation is the only effective way to understand who we are, what divides us and what brings us together.

Support Saint Louis Polonia!

Saint Louis Polonia, Inc. is a Missouri non-profit organization, whose purpose is promotion of the knowledge about the one-thousand-year-long history of Poland and its ethnic diversity and appreciation of the Polish contribution into the world’s culture.

Saint Louis Polonia subscribes to a way of thinking about Poland that is multicultural, diverse, inclusive, and pan-European. The historical Polish state embraced practices of civil rights, democracy, religious tolerance, and constitutional rule that today comprise universal global norms.

Polish national identity has been historically contested by diverse social and political actors. Saint Louis Polonia draws on a legacy of civic Polish identity that incorporates the traditional inhabitants of Polish historical lands: Poles, Jews, Ukrainians, Germans, Lithuanians, Belarusians, Ruthenians and other ethnic groups.

Our goal is to share our time, talent and resources to create a variety of educational, cultural and charitable initiatives in order to enrich the lives of our local communities and contribute to a better understanding among people of different ethnic backgrounds.

We are proud to be part of beautiful St. Louis – a city that was built and shaped by immigrants from many countries including Poland.

Our mission is to celebrate our heritage by creating opportunities that educate, inform and inspire. We strive to expand our own horizons and the minds of our children, friends, and families by keeping them informed of
events that celebrate Polish art, culture, and history.
