Setting up a camp 101

Bonnie Krantz tells the story of planning QQQ camp using cuddly cat GIF's and spreadsheets.

How do you start planning a camp for Borderland? Get digital. Enter the world of zeroes and ones - and bring people together. My first recommendation is to start early and co-creation can strive. Use different platforms for different tasks and communicate a lot. GIFs can be really helpful in expressing your thoughts when words are overrated. There is a tendency of GIFs being cuddly puppies by the beginning of spring, while turning into screaming faces the closer we get to Borderland. It is the circle of life - get used to it.

Do not create a camp with only your best friends. There is a slight risk that you and your best friends are very similar, and a winning concept is combining different talents. You want the people with the craziest of dreams, the doers that can make those dreams happen, and the spreadsheet guy to keep some kind of order in chaos. And not to forget - the naked guy. Every camp needs the naked guy. Put people in a room (physical or digital), throw sweets and glitter on them and start brainstorming ideas. No ideas are bad while brainstorming - but make sure you have the courage to prioritize later.

Make basic rules for everyone
Make sure to set some structures and ground rules for the camp. You do not want it to be too strict, unless you want a reason to punish members by public spanking - in that case - have super strict rules. But by having some solid structures for the camp you will spend less time trying to organize basic stuff  - whereas more time can be spent on creating wild and wet dreams, to fall crazy in love, or to cool of by the mud pool. The rule ‘No acid while cooking’ sure minimized the number of dramas caused by empty stomachs.

With heavy work comes great pleasure. Aim high and make sure all hands must come together to build the camp, and by magic - yes magic - it will bring your camp together.
“A great camp is balancing on a fine line between being welcoming and intimate, while giving a challenging ‘what the fuck is this’-feeling. When leaving Borderland you have a new family of freaks that has challenged your world view. Like a good trip.”
- Queer member of Queerwood
The rewards of being a camp is having a family to come home to by the end of the night after wandering the fields of Borderland. Create something beautiful. Encourage each other. Share love and saliva.
