PRAYER FOR THE UNEMPLOYMENT SITUATION
A friend recently attended a meeting of the Commonwealth Heads of State looking at Youth Unemployment in Africa. The realisation that such a summit takes place jogs the mind away from our preoccupation with our own high unemployment to consider our neighbouring countries where unemployment varies according to various definitions but ranges from 18% in Botswana to 34% in Namibia.
When hearing the incessant talk of unemployment and the suffering it causes we should be reminded to turn to prayer. However Eugene Peterson in his book: Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Integrity reminds us that
“Prayer means that we deal first with God and then with the world.
Or, that we experience the world first, not as problem to be solved
but as reality in which God is acting.” (P41).
We thus look at where God is at work in our situation and begin to move as we see the Holy Spirit direct. Are you waiting prayerfully, experiencing the reality in which God is acting?
We are constantly encouraged seeing where God is at work, often through existing initiatives of the church in Africa.
