Lunch with Leaders
Representative Kurt Schrader, 5th Congressional District

Salem City Club is honored to host Representative Kurt Schrader on Friday, October 21st at noon. His remarks are entitled “Federal Budget 101.” This will be a frank look at the state of the federal 
budget and what our options are for fixing it.
Congressman Kurt Schrader is currently serving his second term in the United States House of Representatives. He represents Oregon's 5th Congressional District which includes all of Marion, Polk, Lincoln and Tillamook Counties as well as the bulk of Clackamas and small portions of Multnomah and Benton Counties. A farmer and veterinarian by trade, Schrader has also been a public servant for more than 3 decades.
Schrader was appointed to the Canby Planning Commission in 1981 where he worked on land use issues for the growing community in southern Clackamas County. In 1996 he was elected to the Oregon State House of Representatives. In the Oregon House he served as a member of the Joint Ways & Means Committee. In 2001, Congressman Schrader was one of 5 legislators asked by their peers to guide Oregon through the worst budget crisis since the depression. In 2003, he was elected to the Oregon State Senate and was immediately appointed to chair the Joint Ways & Means Committee. He continued to serve in that capacity until he was elected to Congress in 2008.
Before being elected to Congress, Schrader built and managed the Clackamas County Veterinary clinic in Oregon City as well as operating his farm where he grew and sold organic fruit and vegetables.
Congressman Schrader attended Cornell University where he received his BA in Government in 1973. He received his veterinary degree from the University of Illinois in 1977.
Congressman Schrader currently serves as a member of the House Committee on Agriculture, the House Committee on Small Business and serves as ranking member of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Finance and Tax. Schrader also chairs the Blue Dog's Taskforce on Fiscal Responsibility and the New Democrat Coalition's Health Care Reform Taskforce.

THE FIRST FIFTH FRIDAY was a great success! Approximately forty people enjoyed an excellent presentation by Russ Beaton on his latest book with co-author Chris Maser, Economics and Ecology-United for a Sustainable World. Thank you, Russ. And special thanks to members Jan Margosian and Carla Mikkelson for organizing this successful Fifth Friday.
At the next Fifth Friday, March 30, 2012, we will hear Gwen Carr discuss her newly released book, Perseverance: A History of African Americans in Oregon’s Marion and Polk Counties.
The final Fifth Friday, Friday, June 29, 2012, will feature Oregon’s first and only woman governor, Barbara Roberts, discussing her newest book, Up the Capitol Steps.

Friday, November 4: THE ECONOMY, PART III: DR. ED WHITELAW, Professor of Ecoinomics at the University of Oregon, and DR. BRYCE WARD, consulting economist with ECONorthwest. Dr. Whitelaw is the founder and Chairman of the Board of ECONorthwest. He has taught at the University of Oregon since 1967 where he is a Professor of Economics. He specializes in urban and regional economics, resource and environmental economics, and the economic consequences of policy decisions. Dr. Ward received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and has taught courses in labor economics, microeconomic theory, public finance, econometrics, environmental and natural resource economics, and social economics at Harvard College, Portland State University, Lewis and Clark College, and the University of Oregon.
Friday, November 18: SALEM MAYOR ANNA PETERSON AND KEIZER MAYOR LORE CHRISTOPHER. Mayor Anna M. Peterson took office on January 11, 2011, and is serving her first term. She has been a leader in business, civic and community organizations in Salem for over 25 years. She attended Roosevelt High School, in Portland, Oregon and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon.
Mayor Lore Christopher took office on January 2, 2001 as the first woman Mayor of Keizer and was elected to a fifth term in 2008. Mayor Christopher holds a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Portland State University. She currently serves as Human Resources Director for the Oregon State Legislature. Special thanks to Salem Hospital for being a Silver Sponsor of this meeting.
