Amelia Island Concours

March 7th - 10th

It is that time again! We have been busy preparing for our annual pilgrimage to the Amelia Island Concours. This year, our journey will start early next week when we load the 1938 SS 100 Jaguar that will appear on the Concours show field on Sunday, March 10th.  This 3.5 liter SS had a bare metal respray by our sister shop Pollock Auto Restoration and we have since made some period correct modifications under the bonnet.  It has been fully sorted and runs very strong. After winning it's class at the Cars and Motorcycles of England and "Best Jaguar" at the Greenwich Concours, we are looking forward to running this spirited prewar machine on the “Eight Flags Road Tour” on Friday before the Concours.
We hope to attend the Bonhams, Gooding & Company and RM Sotheby's auctions and maybe more. For the past 24 years Bill Warner has invited many of our racing legends to serve as honoree for this incredible event. This year, we will see and hear from Jacky Ickx, a Belgian racer who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans six times and I am sure many of his famous race cars will be on the Concours show field. We have tickets for the "The Porsche 962 Dynasty" that will be hosted by Justin Bell and the panel will include Brian Redman, Derek Bell, Hurley Haywood, Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass. As a Le Mans enthusiast, I expect this seminar to be very entertaining!
If all goes well, we will drive the SS100 and participate in the"Eight Flags Tour". The tour is open to all Concours cars, and stops at various points on and around Amelia Island and concludes with a public display and lunch in downtown Fernandina Beach. The Cars & Coffee has become a very popular event on Saturday and has great support from local car clubs. Hopefully we will place the SS100 on the show field Saturday afternoon. Stay tuned on Ragtops & Roadsters Facebook page for more updates. For full schedule of events click on Amelia Island Concours

Motorcars Delivered... Ready for Spring Driving!

by: Dave Hutchison

This 1995 Caterham was acquired by its current owner ten years ago.  He installed a "warmed over" Lotus Elan engine then hit a road block when it came to fitting the ancillaries. We removed the engine, modified the sump, replaced the clutch, and retro-engineered the vintage Twin Cam to fit the Caterham, It runs strong now and will be on the road & track soon!
This couple brought this 1962 Triumph TR3B into the shop last fall as it was time to breath life back into their favorite car again. After a full evaluation, we took care of the usual hydraulic problems, fitted LED lights with 3rd bake light. We also fitted a Moss Motors Rack & Pinion Steering Rack.  We are pleased to report that the steering is definitely lighter and the lights are much brighter!
Ragtops & Roadsters now handles service and restoration of Italian and German vintage cars!  This 1986 Alfa Romeo "Quadrifoglio" came in for an annual safety inspection and service. We replaced old cracked fuel lines, upgraded the brakes, tuned the engine and sorted out some electrical problems. You will see this Italian beauty out after the salt is gone!

Best of Britain " A Century of Bentley"

By Dave Hutchison

IT IS NOT TOO LATE! The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum is still hosting the “Best of Britain” through this weekend 3/3/19. W.O. Bentley was quoted that he wanted; "To build a fast car, a good car, the best in it's class". We still have a decades of Bentleys on display through Sunday, sponsored by Ragtops & Roadsters, to illustrate their design evolution throughout the last 100 years!

Last Saturday the Museum presented Great Britain - Land of Sports Cars.  Several hundred local British Car Club Members from the Delaware Valley Jaguar Club, Delaware Valley Triumph Club, Austin Healey Sports and Touring Club, the MG Club of Philadelphia, the Old York Road Sports Car Club came out to be part of the day. Also the Capital Triumph Register came up from DC and members from the Richmond Triumph Register drove in all the way from Virginia!

Rick Adams, Director of Education, gave a very well prepared talk with a slide show that clearly illustrated how the early W.O. Bentley engine designs gave them the competitive edge on the race track.  Dr. Simeone spoke about the prewar British car design and evolution of the Vauxhall Touring car, the Bentley 3 Liter, the "Blower" Bentley 4.5 Liter, the MG K3 Magnette, the infamous Squire, the Le Mans Aston Martin and the SS 100 Jaguar. Early innovations made Great Britain famous as the Land of Sports Cars!
Then Dr. Simeone and Kevin Kelly, the Museum Curator, drove the cars at speed out behind the museum. Hearing them run hard, smelling the exhaust, made the day! Now I know why the drivers look so small in the BIG open Bentleys!
At one point, Kevin donned a WW I gas mask as the K3 was smoking very badly!  It was great to see these cars get hot and be driven as they should be!  Operations Supervisor, Chris Webb, said, "The whole exhibition was just fantastic".

2019 Philadelphia Auto Show

by: Dave Hutchison

2019 Philadelphia Auto Show Welcomes Largest Crowds in 15 Years!

The 2019 Philadelphia Auto Show had a 750,000 square foot display floor that showcased an array of the newest pre-production models, Super Cars, Exotics and Classics. We are pleased to report that 257,515 people attended this year making it the second largest show since 2004, in it's rich 118-year history. The second weekend set a new record with over 107,000 in attendance!
We had a great week anchoring the AACA Exhibit and promoting the Elegance at Hershey on the red carpet. Thanks to the great support from the AACA Members and our local car clubs, especially the Delaware Valley Triumph Club, our exhibit was fully staffed all week. Our volunteers spoke about their passion for the hobby and we signed up over 40 new AACA Members! Donation records were also set at this year’s Black Tie Tailgate Party, which welcomed 5,500 guests who raised over $615,000 for the Department of Nursing at CHOP! Two more records!
