A New Copyright Directive: Don’t Throw the Baby Out With the Bathwater!
(LIBER, February 11)
"The EU draft Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market is reaching the end game. In the run up the European elections in May this year, the Commission, Council and Parliament are having to agree the final wording of this new Directive.  As reported by LIBER recently two articles remain extremely controversial – Article 11 and Article 13. We are concerned this could jeopardise the future of the whole Directive." Read more

New Research Article (Preprint): "Blacklists" and "whitelists" to Tackle Predatory Publishing : A Cross-sectional Comparison and Thematic Analysis (M. Strinzel​, A. Severin, K. Milzow, Matthias Egger, Peer J Preprints, February 13)
"Despite growing awareness of predatory publishing and research on its market characteristics, the defining attributes of fraudulent journals remain controversial. We aimed to develop a better understanding of quality criteria for scholarly journals by analysing journals and publishers indexed in blacklists of predatory journals and whitelists of legitimate journals and the lists’ inclusion criteria." ARL Annual Salary Survey 2017–2018 (S. Morris, ARL, February 12)
"This report analyzes salary data for all professional staff working in the 123 ARL member libraries during FY2017–2018. Data for 10,518 professional staff members were reported this year for the 114 ARL university libraries, including their law and medical libraries (862 staff members reported by 72 medical libraries and 715 staff members reported by 74 law libraries)." Read more

This national grant competition is "administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) for digitizing rare and unique content in collecting institutions. The program is generously supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is built upon the model of CLIR’s Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives program (2008-2014)." Applications for the 2019 cycle are due by April 3. More information
