Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapū o Whakatū –
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School, and welcome to a new year of love, laughter and learning!

We especially welcome our new tamariki and families to our school - Ataahua and Kerehi
Dora and Olavo, Natasha, Tamatekapua and Tia, Tommo, Harry, Alina, Myla, Rebecca, James and Matthew, Mason Julian, Liam, Otis , Siena, Ilana, James, Grace, Sejaan, Sebastian, Eleanor, Dennis, Eli, Jayms and Apolina.
We know you will add richness to our community and look forward to your input, and successes.
We also officially welcome our new kaiako - Lana, in Room 1(with responsibility for leading Totara syndicate), Dan in Room 2, and Gareth in Room 5. You can read a little about them later in this newsletter.  We also welcome our new intern Carolin from Germany she will remain with us until the end of Term 2.

We also welcome Damian Velluppillai to the role of Board Chairperson.
On your behalf I congratulate our teachers for all the hours of preparation that have  ensured a settled and positive start for all our children.

Thank you for the ways you have prepared your children for the start of the new year, for the changes, challenges and opportunities it presents.
Creating a positive expectation around learning by asking your child what they have learnt or enjoyed, (or a challenge they have overcome), at the end of each day, empowers them to take responsibility for their learning - whether it be academic, physical or social.
Children who see themselves as active learners are more successful than those that don't.

Those children who believe the goals and aspirations of home and school are the same also do better than those whose families are not engaged with their teachers around the learning.
Introductory meetings and a school picnic are upcoming opportunities for you to start the year well, linking strongly to our school and your community.  I encourage you to drop in to chat with me at a whanau forum Tuesday 26 February in the staffroom after 9.am. I will hold these once a term. They are an opportunity to talk informally with me and each other about your ideas  for our school and community.

The beginning of this year has been particularly poignant with the fires still burning - and huge challenges  continue to hang over many of our friends and families involved.
It highlights for us  yet again the importance of community, and how lucky we are that so many are helping when needed.

Offers of food for the families of those involved with the firefighting effort, or toiletries and small pamper gifts for those affected can be left at school for us to pass on.

I'll look forward to seeing you all over the next few weeks.

Ngā mihi,

Pip Wells
Principal.

Congratulations to Shevaun - Maia Māreikura Collier, born on 1th February 2019.  Mum and pēpi doing well

Ko Lana tōku ingoa

Ko Price tōku whanau

Nō Ōtepoti ahau

Ko Aoraki tōku maunga

Kia ora koutou,

My name is Lana Price and I have recently been teaching at a catholic school in Melbourne’s northern suburb; Strathmore. After a number of years teaching in Nelson, I moved to Melbourne to experience a new culture but now my fiancé and I have relocated back to where we call home. In my spare time, you will find me running the streets of Nelson, cooking/entertaining friends, and reading at the beach. I am grateful to be teaching and leading at Nelson Central in 2019 and to be back teaching the New Zealand Curriculum!

Tālofa, my name is Daniel Hytongue and I am really excited to be coming into Nelson Central school as a kaiako (teacher) for 2019. I have just completed my studies at the University of Canterbury, so this year will be my first year teaching.

I am originally from Wellington but moved to Nelson in 2012 and haven’t left since. I am married to Oriwa, we have a 3-year-old son Mika and a new addition Wesley who arrived on Christmas day.  I enjoy playing rugby for Waimea Old boys outside of teaching and spending quality time with my family.

I am big on building and maintaining positive relationships, so I will work hard to get to know you and your child throughout the year. I look forward to meeting you and working alongside your child.

If we all dream together, we can succeed.

Kia ora. My name is Gareth Edwards and I’ve been teaching for four years. My passion for teaching comes from the vision of seeing our Tamariki become confident, connected, actively involved, and lifelong learners. I believe that with a Growth Mindset, our children are empowered to embrace challenges and mistakes, persist in the face of obstacles and learn from constructive feedback. When I’m not teaching you might find me at the golf course, at a sports event or spending time in the outdoors. I love spending time with family and have a daughter who help keeps me young and on my toes.

Life Education Bus
The Life Education Bus is on it's way to Nelson Central School next week and Ingrid has planned lots of activities for our tamariki. There is a cost of $4 per child for this visit.  Apologies if a different amount has been requested.  It is definitely $4.00.
Payment can be made by internet banking:
Account Name: Nelson Central School Board of Trustees Account Number: 03-0703-0481920-01
Cash/Cheque payments can also be made at the silver drop-box in the foyer of the school office. Please include your child's name and class.
If you need any other information please ask you class teacher.

Bikes/Scooters

With the current building work going on it can be a bit confusing where to park your bike or scooter. The bike cage and scooter racks can still be accessed via the small gate on Manuka Street. From here, children can park their bike or scooter, then walk up the stairs by the yellow slide into the school. The bike cage will be locked each day from 9-3. Scooter racks can be locked if you bring a padlock.

There are also a small number of bike racks near the office and the front field.

Masonic Hall Carparking

Please be respectful when parking at the Masonic Lodge carpark.  Please do not park in any named spaces as these spaces have been leased out.
Remember the Masonic Lodge are letting us park here to help relieve parking congestion, please respect this.
If you are unsure which areas are available to park in please contact Judy or Michelle in the school office.

Opening of Pics Peanut Butter Factory

Some of our choir members have been invited to perform at the opening on Saturday 23rd February 2019.
You would have already had information about this.  Thank you for returning the reply sheets promptly.

There appears to be a vomiting bug doing the rounds.

We ask that all students stay home for at least 24 to 48 hours after symptoms have stopped. This is to help prevent spreading this bug around school.

Thank you for your help and support with this.

Kowhai News
Our Play Based Learning for 2019 has got off to a great start, with our tamariki taking on the roles of risk takers, collaborators, story lovers, explorers, performers and creators.

Room 12 has been working on the Key Competency of relating well to others. This week we looked at the types of attributes we would like to see in the children of room 12 this year. We made a Korowai Cloak to represent our learning.  The children felt that being happy, fun, smart, confident, curious, kind, caring and gentle were some of the things they want their friends to be.
Kahikatea News

Room 9 did a thinkers' game around whether it is better to be a child or an adult. Here are their responses.
Is it better to be a child or an adult?

Child
  • You wouldn’t have to pay bills
  • You would live longer
  • You get more toys so it is more fun
  • You will learn more stuff
  • You can be a big sister
  • You have more free time
  • You have lots of energy and are very flexible
  • Old people’s bodies become weaker and may need help
 Adult
  • You can be a loving parent
  • No one tells you what to do
  • Adults get to do cool jobs
  • You can drive cars (except you can drive when you are 16)
  • You become leaner as an adult
Not sure
  • I don’t know what being an adult is like
  • I like being a kid because you get to do cool stuff but if you’re an adult you could do cool stuff with your children

Art Notices

We are excited to welcome NZ Opera back to NCMA on 18 March at 1pm, bringing their School's production of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville".

Rossini's razor-sharp musical wit delivers in riotous technicolour. Dashing Count Almaviva is in love with the feisty young Rosina. But her guardian, Dr. Bartolo, is determined to marry her himself. Cue Figaro – aka The Barber of Seville – with a series of hair-brained schemes, one of which just might work.

The production is particularly suitable for students aged 7-14, and an accompanying teaching resource pack will be distributed to schools in advance. The event will be of value to students at all levels of the NZ curriculum with particular relevance to the Understanding music – Sound arts in context strand.

Please email tanya@ncma.nz with any questions you have. If you are ready to book, please email the number of seats you would like to book for your students and accompanying staff. NCMA will invoice you $5 per student seat after the event.

We hope you and your students can join us for this inspiring event.

Ngā mihi,
