The countdown to Engineers Week has begun, starting on Saturday 2 March and hundreds of engineers, engineering firms and organisations are already signed up and getting involved. There is still time to be part of this nationwide festival of engineering and we have lots of free resources, movies and activities available to help you create an event, large or small, to inspire the next generation of engineers in your town or community. More information is below. Organisers who register will be showcased on our events calendar and will feature in our media outreach.
Throughout 2019 Engineers Ireland will present four regional fora under the theme of One Society, Our Contribution. This new quarterly series aims to give attendees an opportunity to hear directly from influential game-changing figures in business and in engineering. The first forum is on Friday 1 March in Kilkenny organised by our South East Regional Branch and it will highlight exceptional companies and talent that are currently using advanced Machine Learning AI Technology as a key aspect of their business model. Our second forum about future energy will take place on 16 May in Dundalk in association with our North East Region. We hope our members will engage with the fora which present terrific CPD and networking opportunities.
Also in Connect is information about our Jobs Desk, which is a popular member benefit and a great way to recruit the best engineers and also detail about how you can become a CPD Accredited Employer.

How can you tell if you are working for one of Ireland’s top engineering employers? Working for an employer who provides you with opportunities to learn and develop is now as important as working for one that pays well. If an employer cannot demonstrate their commitment to their engineers’ Continuing Professional Development, they will fail to attract and retain talent.
How can you tell if an employer invests in its engineers’ CPD? It’s easy. If they hold the Engineers Ireland CPD Accredited Employer standard they have demonstrated, through submission and audit, that they meet each of the seven criteria on areas such as knowledge sharing, skills and competence frameworks, mentoring or external learning linkages. The standard allows you to compare year-on-year progress, benchmark against your peers and learn from industry leaders.

One Society, Our Contribution – First Forum of 2019
On the eve of Engineers Week, Friday 1 March, our first regional forum of 2019 will take place in association with our South East Regional Branch at the Lyrath Estate, County Kilkenny.
The Applied Artificial Intelligence Ireland Forum & Technical Conference will see presentations and speakers from leading Irish companies and talent that currently use advanced machine learning artificial intelligence (AI) technology as a key aspect of their business model.
The aim of this immersive day of learning, discussion and connection is to support delegates, particularly engineers, business managers, government decision-makers, students and others with an interest in technology, to gain a broader and deeper understanding of where AI is headed and hear of some areas of Irish business life where it is being actively and successfully applied.

Rolls-Royce speaker for Sir Bernard Crossland Lecture
|
|
|
|
Next Tuesday 19 February, Engineers Ireland will welcome Professor Frank Kirkland (pictured), Chief Designer Civil Aerospace, at Rolls-Royce, and Chair of the Rolls-Royce Engineering Fellowship, to deliver the 18th Annual Sir Bernard Crossland Lecture in Belfast titled 'Excellence from Technology: The Rolls-Royce Trent Engine.'
Professor Kirkland has vast experience in working and designing for Rolls-Royce. He is one of the foremost experts in the evolution of modern aircraft jet engines and will share his journey as an engineer, and some of the exciting developments in jet engine technology, past, present and future.
He will talk about his involvement in the Trent 1000 TEN engine development programme, which incorporates proven next generation technology from the Trent XWB, and will be capable of powering all versions of the Boeing 787. He will also discuss his work on the UltraFan™, a geared design that will offer up to 25% improvement in fuel burn in comparison with the first generation of Rolls-Royce Trent engines.
Our Northern Region committee including its Chairman and Council Representative Robert Eadie, CEng, Vice Chairman, Pauline Warde, CEng and Secretary, Denise McMahon, CEng, will be in attendance and will be pleased to welcome you.

Our Northern Region established the annual Sir Bernard Crossland Lecture in 2001 at Queen's University to celebrate and promote excellence in engineering. The late Sir Bernard was a former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University. He was Head of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from 1959 - 1982 and enjoyed an international reputation as a research pioneer in high pressure engineering and explosive welding.
