Akin Welcomes Indigenous Elder,
Artist in Residence Catherine Tammaro

Tomorrow, February 15, 5:30 pm
511 King St West (4th floor)

Akin cordially invites you to attend a special gathering tomorrow, Friday, February 15th, at our King Street Studio to commemorate the opening of Akin’s inaugural Indigenous Elder Artist In Residence Programme.

Please join us in welcoming a brilliant creator and seated
FaithKeeper of the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation, the first Elder Artist In Residence at Akin, Catherine Tammaro (Taǫmęˀšreˀ).

Catherine Tammaro is a widely exhibited multi-media artist and educator. She has a 50-year history of art making, including painting and fine art, design, theatre, experimental and ambient sound, digital photo-based works, installation and more. Her musical collaborations, photographic/written journalism and extensive digital works have been exhibited in traditional and alternative gallery spaces and she has been published through various print and online blogs and publications. She has been an originator, curator and exhibitor and is a strong supporter and promoter of creative growth for young Indigenous artists in Toronto. She is also a mentor of post graduate students and is working actively with her Wendat and Wyandot Sisters in Canada and the USA, on several concurrent projects. She was recently a Grandmother for The Walking With Our Sisters Installation in Toronto.

In her role within the Indigenous community, Catherine is a seated Tradition Keeper for the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation/Speckled Turtle Clan and is actively working with other Wendat Confederacy Members to restore Traditional knowledges in her communities. She is currently a Council Member for the Children’s Peace Theatre and is the Elder for TIBA; the Toronto Indigenous Business Association and is a presence in the community in Toronto. She is also working on a series of paintings for an exhibition in 2020.

We are also honoured to host Terry Swan, a recognized Indigenous Knowledge Keeper who will lead us in an opening ceremony to acknowledge and recognize our new programme. Terry Swan is Cree/Saulteaux/Métis and a member of the Fish Clan, originally from Alberta. She has been a member of the urban Indigenous community in Toronto for over 30 years. Terry is known for her passion in advocating for Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination and fostering meaningful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Catherine is welcomed as the Akin Collective's premiere Indigenous Elder Artist in Residence, and as such, will be directing a range of programming and community engagements throughout the year as well as maintaining her own arts practice in a dedicated studio space at Akin. The Elder Artist In Residence program offers the opportunity for relationship-building with studio members and the community at large, as well as a chance to foster creative and spiritual support for Indigenous artists.

We look forward to collaborating with Catherine on creating strategies prioritizing Indigenous artists and cultural producers. While this unique residency programme is one step forward, Akin recognizes the work that we still have ahead of us in addressing equitable space and resource initiatives for the Indigenous community.

We hope to see you tomorrow at 511 King (4th floor) at 5:30 pm, to share our good news over light snacks and refreshments.
