Celebrate
Wright Library's 80th Anniversary: History, Poetry, and Candlelight!

Dear Wright Library patrons,

Wright Library celebrates its 80th anniversary today, Feb. 14! On Feb. 14, 1939, more than 200 people gathered to see their new library for the first time.

We invite you to join us tonight in the same rooms, 80 years ago to the day, for the 80th Anniversary Candlelight Commemoration from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. The full schedule is below.

It is, of course, also Valentine's Day, and we are reflecting on 80 years of love that's been poured into establishing and maintaining a thriving library in the center of Oakwood. We will be sharing some patron love stories today on our social media. Follow along and share your own!

Tonight at the library, you can

* Make vintage valentines, enjoy light refreshments, explore 1930s and 1940s books, clothes, and jewelry, and learn the history of Wright Library.
* Learn from the Oakwood Historical Society, who will be on hand to share the story of Oakwood in the 1939 and the following war years. They plan to bring a special guest who was part of the war efforts here in Oakwood. Come meet her at their table!
* Enjoy live storytelling and poetry: At 7:30, we will gather for a candlelight storytelling of Wright Library's opening and history, including the night - 80 years ago - that the lights went off suddenly during the opening ceremony. Two esteemed local poets, Betsy Hughes and David Lee Garrison, will close the evening with short poetry readings.

With all our library love, Wright Memorial Public Library
