From the

Headmistress
Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is enjoying a very happy Valentine's Day today.  It has been wonderful to feel the warmth of the sun over the last few days.

Yesterday Harry Whinney joined us in our whole school assembly to present us with a copy of "Lost Words".  This is a very special book written by Robert Macfarlane and beautifully illustrated by Jackie Morris.  Words from the natural world such as acorn, dandelion and otter are sadly disappearing from our language and are increasingly difficult to find in a Junior Dictionary.  "Lost Words" aims to bring these words back to our children's minds.  Many local businesses kindly donated enough money to provide a copy for every school in Lincolnshire.  It is a beautiful book and I have no doubt that it will be loved and treasured by many in our school.

Over half-term I hope you are able to enjoy some time with your family in our stunning countryside, perhaps searching for some names from "Lost Words", or even managing some "extreme reading" while you enjoy some precious time together.

Enjoy the weekend
Kinds regards

Mrs K.A Korcz

Don't forget to bring in your extreme reading photos after half term!
Well done Mr Tranter!!

Mr Tranter had a big surprise when he opened up the School's copy of the weekly publication "The Week Junior".

Little did he know that he had been nominated for "Teacher of the Week" by Leah in his class and that he had been chosen to go in the publication!

Thank you for nominating him Leah and we are all very proud of our very own Mr Tranter!

Coding in Reception

In ICT the children had a super lesson on algorithms and coding. First they watched a clip of a teacher trying to make a jam sandwich following some very inaccurate instructions from the children in his class! Needless to say the result was far from a delicious jam sandwich but highly amusing to watch!

The children in our Reception class then had a go at programming their own ‘Code-a-Pillar’ and the beebots to move across the classroom, under tunnels and to complete obstacle courses. They were all using simple directional language and using the terminology with confidence! It was such fun for all the children and grown- ups!  Great code work Reception!
Year One
Valentine's Day is all sewn up!

Class One have been trying their hand at sewing and they have been very successful indeed. The mission - to make a present for Valentine's Day. The plan - choose some fabric (in January!), draw carefully around a template, cut out and sew your fabric (weekly!) As you can see every member of the class has made a beautiful cushion to take home with lots of love. Look out for our young, talented designers in John Lewis Home in the future. Excellent work everyone. Mrs Bell
Year 2
Year 2 Poems

After the Class Two Assembly many thought our energy reserves would be depleted, but they were wrong! Class Two have been learning about "kenning" poems and other poetic devices. The children got straight back into the swing of things with small group performances of some of their favourite poems. The poems were titled: 'River' by June Crebbin, 'Tiger' by Usha Kishore and 'Don't Call Alligator Long-Mouth Til You've Crossed The River' by John Agard.

Make sure you ask the children which was their favourite!

Partitioning Numbers

Class Two have been focusing on partitioning numbers this week. It is an important skill in Maths to identify the numerical value of each digit in a number e.g. 4375. The children in Class Two have been using coloured tokens in order to determine the value of each digit. We had a competition to see which team could successfully partition each number the fastest. We went up into millions, can you believe that?

At Grantham Preparatory School we think it is integral to be challenged in order to reach our maximum potential!

Congratulations to the winning team of Jessica, Kitty, Connie and Albert. We definitely have incredible mathematicians moving through the school.

U9 Football @ Ayscoughfee Hall

Our U9's started brightly, pushing forwards and shots taken from a distance, going just wide of the post. Ayscoughfee then settled into the match and with pressure of their own, took a 2 goal lead.

Our U9's kept battling with determination.  Harry D chased down a ball, that looked like it was going out for a throw and played it back to Finley, who struck it sweetly from a distance.  The shot went over the top of the keeper's outstretched fingers and hit the back of the net behind him.  Unfortunately, just as we looked back in the game, Ayscoughfee replied with a quick goal of their own, which seemed to take the wind out of our sails.

The second half saw no more scoring, until right at the end, when Ayscoughfee furthered their lead.

Final score, Ayscoughfee 4-1 Grantham Prep.

U11 Football v Ayscoughfee Hall

The Under 11 boys took to the football field in their first competitive action of the season away at Ayscoughfee Hall. The game started positively with the team controlling the game in midfield but a break away chance for the home team saw a brilliant save from Thomas Cremer only to see the rebound fall into the path of the oncoming forward who scored without much effort. A string of saves from the Grantham goalkeeper followed and the team was lucky to go in at half time not being further behind. Periods of positive football from Edward and Leo saw Thomas Concarr produce a shot which went narrowly wide and minutes later a good shot from Elijah just whistled past the post. Unfortunately the sticky, energy sapping ground began to take its effect late on, and despite some brave defending from Charlie, the team conceded 2 more goals. Despite the defeat the team played the game in the best spirit and will have learnt a lot from the experience.

U9 A's Netball v St Hugh's

The under 9A team had a fantastic afternoon of netball on Wednesday. The girls really gave it one hundred percent and it was lovely to see their determination.

At times the ball travelled down the court with ease and without even being intercepted by St. Hugh's team. The girls have been busy in lessons learning about the importance of passing the ball to someone who is in a space and unmarked. In addition to this, they’ve practised marking the opposition to win back the ball and denying space on centre passes. These skills are very difficult to master at such a young age, but it was a joy to see them trying.

The final score was:

3-2 win to TGPS, with us clinching the winning goal in the final quarter.
Captain today: Savannah

Keep the practice up girls. Remember you can borrow netballs from the play shed and work on your shooting and passing skills. Some of the girls attend “Fenland” netball club outside of school, to continue playing and improving.

Mrs Klimes
Under 9B  Netball v St Hugh’s

After a slow start the girls got into the full swing of the game; rotating on and off the court to learn about game play and the various positions on the court. Despite the 9-0 score line in favour of our opponents, our netball players played with determination and learnt useful new skills throughout the match.

Use playtimes to sharpen up your shooting skills girls.

Player of the match goes to Eva for being aware of all aspects of the game and never giving up. Well done.

A Walk around the Historic Center

In order to promote the cultural and historical knowledge of Jalisco, the 8th grade students had a guided tour around the Historic Center of Guadalajara.

The purpose was for the students to meet renowned personalities, facts of the state and the world. The students visited the Government Palace, the Regional Museum of Jalisco , Plaza de la Liberación and Cabañas Cultural Hospice. In addition to knowing part of our history and culture, the students achieved a healthy coexistence as a group.

My Body Belongs To Me!’

‘Allow your children to be taught how to take care of and protect their bodies in a fun and interactive way.’

On Friday, 1st February 2019, the Year 1’s had an interactive educational puppet show on, ‘Our Bodies’.

When used in teaching, puppets can help boost creativity and stimulate kids’ imaginations, from the preschool age up to early teen years. The innate interactivity draws children in and encourages them to be actively involved in the learning process and share their thoughts and observations.

The show was excellent and really involved the children as they joined in singing and dancing to various action songs. They had a lot of fun!
