The Fledgling--Week of February 15, 2019

From Mother Megan:

Mtr. Megan is in NYC and going to see Hamilton! She will be back for Sunday services.

If you have a submission to the Fledgling, send it to the office by Thursday morning for inclusion on Friday.  Bulletin announcements should be into the office by Wednesday morning.
  • If you know of someone who would like to receive the Fledgling, please send their email to the office.

Prayer for the week

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

What's New?

Holy Land Pilgrimage!  In 2020, Mtr Megan will lead a pilgrimage to Israel/Palestine from January 29-February 10.  We will go to Jerusalem, Nazareth, Bethlehem, Galilee, and all the places we read about in the Gospels.  Come and see the land that formed our faith, and those who keep it alive today!  Email Mtr Megan for more information.

ADULT FORUM Our next Adult Forum book study, beginning in Lent (first Sunday in Lent is March 10th), will be a reading and discussion of "Short Stories by Jesus, The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi" by Amy-Jill Levine, published by Harper, 2014.
Have you thought about introducing a Lenten discipline this year? How about praying the Anglican Rosary? This is a practice introduced in the Episcopal Church in the 1980s. While the concept is similar to praying a Catholic Rosary, there are distinct differences using traditional prayers, and Scripture. We will be making our own Rosaries during the Adult forum on March 3 at 9:15 in the Parish Hall. Each kit will be $10.  Please see Lisa Tatusko with any questions.

CHANCEL CHOIR welcomes new members as we prepare for the arrival of Lent next month. We rehearse together Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings, and sing weekly in worship offering a variety of anthems, psalms, service settings and hymns. For more information, please speak with Organist Karen Hindenlang after any service.

LAUNDRY LOVE needs volunteers! Laundry Love is a new ministry for St. John's. We have turned the room under the Parish House into a miniature free laundromat, which will be open while Loaves & Fishes serves meals. Clean clothes are essential to a sense of self worth- and doing laundry can be quite expensive. We believe this will be of great service to the guests of Loaves & Fishes. Contact the office if you would like to help. Training is scheduled for this Sunday after the 10:30am service.

If you were not able to be at the Annual Meeting, and you would like a copy of the packet--which contains the financial report for 2018, a budget overview for 2019, reports from various committees, and other information, please email AnnMarie in the office.  We will send you one either in PDF format or hard copy!

Ongoing Concerns:

LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS AND LECTORS: If anyone is interested in being a LEM or Lector, please speak to either Michael Roman or Pamela Talbott.

BEYOND THE PLATE St. Catherine’s is very excited to be hosting the third annual Beyond the Plate, a gourmet dinner to raise funds for the Ithaca MobilePack for Feed My Starving Children. Building on the inaugural event in 2017, last year’s dinner was a huge success, with 160 guests in attendance and $30,000 in funds raised. Beyond the Plate is designed to do three things:
· Raise significant funds for the Ithaca MobilePack, which needs to raise $77,000 annually to pay for the 350,000 meals we pack each year.
· Raise awareness of the work that is being done in our community through the MobilePack, which enlists approximately 1,600 volunteers each year.
· Bring together people from our many faith traditions and throughout Ithaca to enjoy delicious food and drink in support of a wonderful cause.
The dinner will be held here in Mahler Hall on Sunday, March 3, from 5–9 p.m.
The evening will include:
· Local expert chefs donating their time and artistry, each preparing a course tailored to the evening. Featured chefs are Jim Durkee of Cayuga Medical Center; Sam Epps of Gola Osteria; Fr. Joseph Marcoux, pastor of St. Catherine’s; Serendipity Catering; and David Skolfield of the Country Club of Ithaca.
· Wine pairings selected by Julie Crowley of Triphammer Wines & Spirits.
· Information shared about the Ithaca MobilePack and the work of Feed My Starving Children.
· Jean McPheeters as our emcee for the evening.
Tickets will go on sale on February 11 for $100 each; see St. Catherine’s website (www.stcathofsiena.org) for details. Tables of 8 are available, and the dinner will be reserved seating only. Please purchase yours quickly to ensure that you can be a part of this wonderful event. There are still opportunities for event sponsors—contact Ann Marie Eckert for more information at ann.marie.eckert@dor.orgor 257-2493.

COFFEE HOUR We need people to sign up to host coffee hour after the 10:30 am service. It doesn't need to be elaborate, just an opportunity for parish fellowship and to welcome newcomers. A few parishioners/ families hosting together makes it even easier. Please consider signing up on the sheet on the bulletin board in the Parish House. Sara and Pam will happily give you pointers!

2019 STEWARDSHIP ENVELOPES are on the back table in alphabetical order. If you don't see yours, please contact the office. Envelopes help insure the accuracy of our contribution reporting.
