MLK Lecture
Friend of Grinnell UCC Congregational and current president of Grinnell College, Raynard Kington, recently delivered the University of Iowa Health Care Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Lecture in Iowa City. One idea delivered in the talk is the importance and difficulty of social justice work. In the spirit of Black History Month, we encourage you to check out the video at the link below.

Thank you to MJ Zimmerman for bringing this speech to the attention of all of us. https://www.grinnell.edu/news/president-kington-delivers-martin-luther-king-jr-distinguished-lecture
Forum on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle The Grinnell League of Women Voters will be hosting a Forum on Tuesday, February, 19 at 7:00 pm at the Drake Community Library on the theme of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  The three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Plus, the three R’s save land and money communities must use to dispose of waste in landfills.
The purpose of the Forum is to provide an opportunity for a group of panelists to share information and ideas on what households can do reduce, reuse and recycle. On the panel will be Duane Neff, Jennifer Frampton, Rich Dana and Byron Worley.  Duane Neff, who is the Public Service Director in Grinnell, will explain the updated policy for recycling in the city of Grinnell.  Jennifer Frampton will be able to offer ideas on ways to change our behavior and how to reduce what we throw away.  She is the Program Director at SCISWA (South Central Iowa Solid Waste Agency).  Rich Dana is currently the Director of Imagine Grinnell who will share ideas on composting.  Byron Worley is a member of the Grinnell City Council.

Everyone who wants to learn more about the three R’s is encouraged to attend.  Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and share ideas as well.
Care for Creation News
Americans eat more than six times the recommended amount of red meat. Beans are a healthy alternative since they are rich in fiber, iron, potassium, and amino acids, as well as protein. They are also better for the planet:  a 2017 paper published in the journal Climate Change predicted that the US could achieve up to 74% of its greenhouse-gas reduction goals by 2020 if Americans would switch from beef to eating more beans.
