Fighting Nature's Fury - The Tasman Fires

A single spark and within hours fire fighters in Tasman were battling a blaze that was to become the biggest bush fire in nearly 75 years. But as emergency services continue to to dampen the hotspots, attention is now turning to the long-term impact on the region. Alex Ashton reflects on the response to the Tasman fire, and questions whether New Zealand is ready for a future where fires like this could become more frequent.

Meet this week's reporter - Alex Ashton

Alex Ashton is a Morning Report producer and reporter based in his hometown of Wellington. He has spent the past year and a half living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; which he says gave him a much wider perspective on the world. While covering the Tasman fires Alex, was impressed by the stoicism and resilience of those affected, as they faced immense uncertainty. Alex is a keen cook and eater of plant-based food. Last week 15-year-old Haami Hanara was jailed for life for murdering a rough sleeper in Flaxmere. He was 14 at the time, making him one of the country's youngest killers.
