"This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursday."
- Arthur Dent, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams

Hey there,

Welcome back to Thoroughly Thursday, the I Love You Like a Friend edition. Happy Valentine's Day! Of all the various holidays, Valentine's Day seems to force the most diametrical responses from people. It seems hard to be neutral about a holiday that celebrates romantic love. For those that are single, have complicated entanglements, or are generally clueless, V-Day can get complicated (NOTE: I totally wanted to write VD, but that would get weird). I feel the holiday peaked in 2nd grade when it was just about sharing tear-off valentines (preferably Star Wars or GI Joe) with your class and eating a sickening amount of pink candy.

What I'm Watching - An Actor's Gut
This last week, Albert Finney died. One of the great British actors of the late 20th century, he was a ubiquitous presence in television and movies for decades. However, my favorite performance by him is the 2002 movie The Gathering Storm, where he portrayed Winston Churchill in his infamous "Wilderness Years." The BBC-HBO film is chock-full of Britain's acting elite (Jim Broadbent, Vanessa Redgrave, Derek Jacobi) and young actors who would go on to massive fame in later years including Lena Headey, Tom Hiddleston, and Hugh Bonneville. But, it is Finney who encapsulate Churchill's mannerisms and massive physical presence that makes it one of the best movies on the former PM. You can watch it for free here.

What I'm Listening to - The Chickens Don't Seem to Mind
Every once in awhile, I find that I'm looking for something different. Recently, after watching Grimes' “We Appreciate Power" video for the umpteenth time, I randomly clicked on a YouTube recommendation for a video by Özgür Baba. "Dertli Dolap" is a 14min song sung by the bearded Baba with a saz (Turkish folk guitar) in the countryside surrounded by farm animals. The song is about the unhappiness of a tree that has been turned into a wardrobe (you can see the lyrics here). It's amazing.

What I'm Doing - Growing More Than Just Vegetables
This last weekend, my daughter had the opportunity to volunteer at GrowGood Farms in Bell, CA. A small 1.5-acre urban farm across the street from a Salvation Army shelter, GrowGood provides fruits and vegetables for the 500 residents while selling excess produce at farmers’ markets and to local restaurants. I got to tag along for the morning and was able to create this short 1min video. To learn more, check out their website here.

All the best, and remember, tomorrow is Friday. :)
