EARLY SPRING UPDATE

Dear Neighbors,

We're ready for spring.  How about you?  We invite you to get an early start to the season with the EGT at number of events that we have in the pipeline for the next month or so.  Also, don't forget that our monthly meetings (the 4th Wednesday of each month (7pm) at the Ewing Senior and Community Center) are open to the public and you are most welcome to join us.   Read our 2018 Annual Report to learn more about our activities and accomplishments and where you think you might fit in.  We welcome your ideas and participation.

First up

Are you "Wild About Ewing?"  We hope so.  We extend our invitation, or rather call to action, for your participation in our goal to garden for wildlife in Ewing because, in a world of threatened ecosystems and loss of biodiversity, every garden matters.   Join us on Monday, February 25th at 7 pm at the Ewing Branch Library on 61 Scotch Rd. for our presentation on Gardening for Wildlife in the Suburban Landscape

This program will introduce the National Wildlife Federation's Gardening for Wildlife program and explain how you can protect and preserve vanishing wildlife on your own property.  Ewing's Green Team and Environmental Commission have teamed up to promote this effort with our Ewing Community Wildlife Habitat Project (or Wild About Ewing)  and work towards certifying Ewing as a Community that is taking action for vanishing wildlife species.  Want to learn more?  We hope so and invite you to join us.

Gardens with Buzz

What can you do to attract birds to your garden?  What are the best plants to entice bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects to make their homes with you? What maintenance techniques are most hospitable for these garden visitors and residents?  ‘Gardens with Buzz’ will provide answers to these questions.

This program will be presented by Mary Anne Borge, naturalist, writer, photographer, and educator. She is the Associate Editor for Butterfly Gardener magazine, a publication of the North American Butterfly Association; an instructor and naturalist at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in New Hope, Pennsylvania; a Pennsylvania Master Naturalist, and the team leader for Lambertville Goes Wild. Her photographs have been featured in numerous publications.  She shares her love of nature through her writing and photography at the-natural-web.org

Sponsored by the Ewing Community Wildlife Habitat Project and the Ewing Community Gardens Association.

Dark Skies Matter - International Dark Sky Week

March 31 - April 7

We would also like to take this opportunity to talk about the issue of light pollution.  Did you know that the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light, known as light pollution, can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate?

When did it become the norm to leave outdoor lights on through the night?  Help make a difference.  Turn out your lights and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.  Join the Ewing Green Team in addressing this issue during International Dark Skies Week (March 31 – April 7) and every night and help to reclaim our nighttime heritage.
Read our last website post on the issue to learn more or go to the International Dark Skies Week  website.

There is, as always, more to come, but we'll save April's events and beyond for the next newsletter.   For now, we'll leave you with this lovely taste of spring below.
