The First Step Act was recently signed into law by the current administration to reduce prison sentencing for federal inmates. Emory International Law Review 2019 Symposium

Emory International Law Review (EILR) will host our very first full-day symposium. EILR seeks to further bring academic and legal attention to the internationally vulnerable persons, Volume 33’s Symposium’s topic will be on the Continued Relevance and Challenges of the 1951 Refugee Convention on the Global and Local Levels focusing on the Global Compact for Refugees and the Global Compact for Safe and Orderly Migration.
EILR Volume 33’s Symposium will constitute three panels, each discussing at different macro-levels: global, regional, and local. The first panel, which will follow a keynote speech delivered by Professor James Hathaway, will focus on the global compacts, the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework, the lack of a comprehensive framework for migration, and the two school of thoughts, scholars who agree that there is no clear distinction between a refugee and a labor migrant and scholars who agree that there is a clear distinction between a refugee and a labor migrant. The second panel will discuss the current migration and refugee situation in the Americas. The third panel will discuss the impact of the global compact by local practitioners who deal with clients—migrants and refugees alike.

The program offers a great opportunity to network with the daily 80 trial attorneys and judges assembled from across the country who will be hosted by the program during the week as trial skills instructors.

- The pay rate is $10 per hour
- 1Ls will receive an extension to participate in the 1L Journal Write-On Competition

Attention all 3LS – Pro Bono Medal Deadline
|
|
In order to receive a pro bono medal and be listed in the commencement program, the deadline to submit all pro bono hours for approval is 12 noon on March 1, 2019. 3Ls who submit their hours after the deadline, and are approved, may still receive their medal at graduation, but will NOT be listed in the program.
As a reminder, in order to receive the pro bono medal, you must complete 75 hours of pro bono work during your time at Emory Law. If you have any questions, please contact The Center for Public Service.

Sixteenth Annual Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal Symposium
|
|
On Thursday, February 21, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. At the Symposium, you will hear from practicing bankruptcy attorneys and restructuring professionals on two panels. The first will discuss tuition clawback, a new phenomenon in consumer bankruptcy that is raising tuition costs across the country. The second will cover choice of law in cross-border insolvency cases, a growing practice that will only become more important as our world continues to shrink.
The Journal is also excited to announce our first keynote speaker, the Honorable Mary Grace Diehl, who will be speaking on the development of the Bankruptcy Code throughout the 40 years since its passage. Judge Diehl sat on the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia from 2004 until her retirement last year. Prior to taking the bench, Judge Diehl chaired the bankruptcy group at Troutman Sanders LLP. Judge Diehl received her B.A. summa cum laude from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., and her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School.
