As hearts turn to love and friendship, I reflect on true friends: friends who risk telling us their truth, especially when it may be hard to hear.
Let us seek to be better friends and Friends; and to listen with open minds and hearts for Spirit.
Thank you Friends, past and present, for persisting in raising weighty concerns and inconvenient truths in our Monthly, Quarterly and Yearly Meetings.

Let's Play Quaker Jeopardy!
Q: This challenging Friend was ridiculed and disowned from Quaker meetings in England and Pennsylvania during the 1700's - but is now recognized as a Friend of the Truth.
A: Who was Benjamin Lay? An outspoken abolitionist, feminist and vegetarian, Lay was an upstander who confronted injustice. He alienated Philadelphian Quakers with his relentless “speaking truth to power”.

Famous, then infamous, then nearly forgotten - Lay was dismissed as “deranged and mentally deficient” in his lifetime due his refusal to quietly accept the status quo. He publicly offended slave-owning Friends and was disowned by the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia and written out of Abington MM. Lay lived to see PYM unite in 1758 on disciplining or disowning slave-owning members. A year later he died at age 77, having lived a long and fiery life of light. He lies buried in Abington MM Burial Ground.

A Full House at the Winter PQM Meeting - January 27, 2019 at Arch Street Meeting House
Following deep worship, good food and warm hospitality, nearly 50 Friends joined for host program and PQM business. First, Mike Kuchar shared plans for the Memorial Garden at Southwest Burial Ground. Then Jerome Shabbazz, Exec. Director, inspired Friends with the ongoing transformation of and by the Overbrook Environmental Center in Philadelphia.

Worship for Business attracted Friends across the Quarter to consider Minutes of Concern from three member meetings regarding the PYM Multicultural Audit Committee's RFP and process, which began in 2017); and the recently released FGC Institutional Racism Task Force report and summary.
The DRAFT Minutes Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting- Jan 27.2109 include the resulting PQM Minute of Concern on the Multicultural Audit and will be considered for approval at the next Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting on April 28th, at Chestnut Hill MM.

Co-sponsored by Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting and the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral’s Cathedral Arts program. The exhibit runs January 6 – March 1, 2019, and proceeds benefit UNHCR Lifeline Program for Syrian Refugee families in Jordan. Complete catalog available. GMM Supports Ujima Friends Peace Center Community Food Program. GMM reminds us that "The Ujima Friends Peace Center, a ministry of the Fellowship of Friends of African Descent, distributes food to people on the last Saturday of each month. Bring non-perishable donations to our meetinghouse (Germantown MM) of canned food, cereals, and other non-perishable staples and leave them in the plastic bins under the big table in the kitchen. Your support will be much appreciated."

The Grandom Institution is seeking Friends to serve with an interest in energy and energy efficiency on its Distribution Committee.
Established in 1841, the Grandom Institution provides funds to nonprofit organizations in the Philadelphia area for heating and energy assistance to their residents or their low-income clients. Volunteers contribute modest amount of time in several meetings, reviewing grant applications and visiting sites.
