"Think Big" with the Center for International Affairs
The Center for International Affairs is offering three opportunities for members of the campus community to discuss the future of Case Western Reserve University. These events are part of the Provost's "Think Big" initiative and faculty, staff and students are invited to participate and help generate ideas to share with the Thinkers group. Each of the three discussion groups will be hosted by a different office within the Center: the Office of Global Strategy, the Office of International Student Services and the Office of Education Abroad. More information about each discussion group can be found by clicking on its title:

Career Preparation Etiquette Dinner for International Students
As international students work toward graduation, the Center for International Affairs wants to help them be prepared to make the best impression possible during their job search and future career. Job interviews often include a meal with potential colleagues, and many companies ask employees to take clients out for nice dinners. Learning Western expectations of politeness can help students feel more comfortable and confident in these social situations. With the help of generous sponsors across campus, the Center is hosting its first Career Preparation Etiquette Dinner for international students on March 19. If you know of any international students who would be interested in attending, please share the information below.

Get to Know the Center Staff
Marielena Maggio is the Director of International Student Services in the Center for International Affairs and says her overall goal is to enrich the university experience for CWRU's international students, "We want students to consider ISS their hub and know that they can reach out to us to find answers or get connected."

On a daily basis, Maggio acts as a staff supervisor for ISS and an immigration compliance specialist for CWRU, "To be effective in both, I need to regularly engage and communicate with stakeholders on behalf of the international student population, faculty, administrators, government agencies, and others so that, as an institution, we are always thinking about how to address the unique needs/challenges that international students face and how we can continue to be a welcoming and inclusive community where they can thrive."

There were some serendipitous circumstances that led Maggio to her career at CWRU, but her interest began with fond memories of studying abroad in Madrid and the amazing support system she had during that time, “I started to think about how I could connect the passion I had for that experience with my professional goals and how I could be that support for others studying in the United States," she said.

Maggio encourages faculty and staff to call or email her any time, "Having open communication with people across campus, all of whom play a role in shaping international students’ experiences, is so important to their success."

Maggio can be reached at 216-368-2517 or mxm346@case.edu.

Student Global PerspectivesCWRU student Madison Tse poses for a picture outside during her study abroad experience in England
Kayele Silue spent spring 2018 studying abroad in Comillas, Madrid. A finance major and an international student from Cote d’Ivoire, Kayele found that “studying abroad confirmed that getting out in the world, living with people from another background and learning part of their culture is an undeniable source of growth, and one can never have enough of that."
