Gondolier Sun Letters to Editor about the Airport

Recently there have been a number of letters sent to the Gondolier Sun complaining about the airport and questioning its usefulness.  If you have been a member of VASI for any length of time you may recall that a few years ago a challenge to the airport came from a few that gathered momentum and was repelled.

At that time the then VASI board spent a lot of time and energy learning about the City's obligations to PERMANENTLY maintain and manage a GA airport here at Venice.

This valuable information has been compiled in a factual "Frequently Asked Questions" that is available at our website.  We urge you to become familiar with those facts (to download the document click here) and more importantly to make your voices heard by responding to such "letters to the editors".

I have included an example of one of the letters and the response from an informed reader.

Please shut down the Venice airport

Why does the Venice airport continue to exist? Who is flying over our homes, downtown, schools, and beaches spreading their persistent and excessive noise on a daily basis? What will it take to shut the airport down so we all have a chance to live in peace? Whose powerful hands control the operation and future of the airport, and are the residents of Venice allowed any input? Right now Venice has an identity crises. It is improving an already beautiful downtown and has several wonderful natural beaches. Still it allows an airport, in the middle of a residential area, to fly it’s planes low and loud over the heads of people who live and vacation here. It makes no sense. It is time to shut this airport down and force them to move to a more rural area where they will bother no one. The airport facility which is used by relatively few people should be turned into a park that can be used by every person who enter and reside within the borders of our fine community.

Airport concerns.

In Let’em Have It, people are saying they enjoy the Venice airport. I grew up in Bradenton when Sarasota airport had a big growth spurt in the late seventies. That whole neighborhood that surrounds the airport was complaining and complaining about the jet noise and the jet traffic. So, the county, city and FAA got involved and went to those property owners and offered them two choices. One choice was to replace all the single-paned window with a double-pane window. Today that would be equivalent to impact graded windows where you don’t hear stuff as much. Or they simply buy the property and then they tear it down. All those houses went away that were right in the jet take off area. All the other people either took the windows, or they didn’t take anything, and that was it. The deal was…once that’s done… to shut up about it. No more griping, moaning and complaining. The airport was always there, just like Venice airport has always been there as an army air force base. But if they want to mitigate for those neighbors immediately across the airport… fine, do the mitigation for them and then everybody just needs to shut up about it. Get over it or move.

As you can see above, the opinions expressed range from the uninformed and naive to constructive suggestions.  In the past, VASI board was quick to respond - you can read an example here.   Not every comment warrants a rebuttal but it is important that local residents hear from both sides in a balanced and fair fashion.  We encourage our members to help educate others about the airport when they see the right opportunity to do so.

Warbirds over Venice - another well attended event

The Warbirds visited Venice again this year.  You may have seen the various articles about it in the local paper and the city website.  It is truly an impressive site to see these "flying museums" flying across the beautiful Venice sky.  The Collins foundation, the operators of the event, are hosted by the local EAA Chapter 1285.  The following update from Dennis King best sums it up:

"We had a great effort by EAA volunteers this past week at the Collings Foundation Warbirds visit in Venice!  We had a lot of hard-working volunteers, and reports are that the Collings Foundation was quite happy with the number of tours they sold.  If you have any pictures from the event, please post them on our Facebook Page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/456280098195700/

Thanks to Doug Griffin (Venice High Volunteers) and Rod Spurlock (Scouts and others) we had a large number of student volunteers this year. It was a great opportunity for them to get some time near the warbirds and on the airport.

Thanks to Dennis Flood, former EAA 1285 president, for once again being the Collings coordinator again this year. That is a lot of work!"

Kudo's to the EAA Chapter and Dennis Flood for organizing this every year.

Venice enjoys visitors from all over the region for this event.  The Bradenton Herald did a nice write up about it a few years ago with the title "'Flying museum' World War II planes draw hundreds to Venice" .  You can read it by clicking here.

VASI Pilots supporting youth aviation

Many of us attended the "Aging Pilot" seminar at last month's VASI meeting - we now need to replenish the well...

Scholarships:

This year, three Venice High School students will be the lucky recipients of aviation scholarships arranged and coordinated by the VASI board and VASI member Doug Griffin.

VASI is again offering scholarships to two deserving Venice High School students who are headed towards furthering his/ her education and careers in aviation.  The scholarship is awarded in consult with Venice High School career counselors.

The third scholarship was made possible by Doug Griffin through Sun_n_Fun.  Here is his note:

"I just heard and wanted to share the good news with those of you who helped with the airport field trip last week.

Based on what we're building with the VHS Connects aviation club, along with a very successful field trip last week in which SnF came down, the Sun n Fun organization just confirmed that they are awarding a VHS student a full flight training scholarship. This is a "go get your pilot's licence, we're paying for it" scholarship.

Sun n Fun was very impressed with the "awesome volunteers and community support".

I'm going to present the details to the students on Monday. However this is pretty exciting news, all made possible by your help and support of the VHS students.

Thank you all for making last Monday a pretty great day for the students.

Doug Griffin"

If you know a VHS student who is interested in aviation be sure and let them know of these three great opportunities.

The Regulated Airport

This article does a good job to sum up the complex relationship of an airport, its users and its neighbors

"... regulatory compliance is a HUGE deal in the aviation industry. This becomes apparent as soon as flight training begins..."

Going to a strange airport?
Being new to the area "every airport" is new to me but I think that this is useful for all of us as airports change over time and we all  need to do our due diligence before flying to any destination.

Know your aircraft’s Performance Profiles

Instrument pilots must have a solid understanding of their aircraft’s performance profile. Countless pilots have wasted valuable training hours—and struggle to this day—because their instructor skipped this first critical step. Here’s the step-by-step process for creating the essential performance profiles for each airplane you fly. It will help you fly IFR with more precision, and reduce your workload in every phase of flight.
