Introducing '19 WCS Speakers
Becky Mason & Reid McLachlan
from Chelsea, Quebec:
"Viewfinder: The Legacy of Ken Buck"
You may not recognize the name, but if you're a canoeist chances are very good that you have seen and admired his work. Ken Buck was the longtime cameraman for author, filmmaker and canoeing legend Bill Mason and was a dear friend of the Mason family. Sadly Ken died last year at the age of 74 after 22 well-lived years battling multiple myeloma.
Becky was a toddler when she first met Ken and Sue Buck and they have been an integral part of her life ever since. From their first camping and filming trips together to having Ken as her DOP on her last film a few years ago they had a close personal and working relationship built on mutual respect and love.
Reid first met Ken in 1983, shortly after being sucked into the Mason family vortex by Becky. Through the years he relished hearing Ken's filming stories and has fond memories of paddling Mason's beloved Petawawa River with Ken, as well as guiding a Black Feather trip that Ken and Sue went on down the Dog River and along the Superior coast.
Becky and Reid will be sharing some stories and memories of Ken and will showcase his greatest shots as well as highlight what it was really like making films with Bill Mason in the 70's. They take solace in knowing that Ken's work lives on in his footage, photos and his book “Bill Mason: Wilderness Artist” and are honoured to have Ken as such an integral part of the Mason family canon.
Paddling partners since they were teenagers, Becky and Reid have spent their adult lives travelling the land by canoe and sharing their passion for all that is canoeing. Daughter of Bill Mason, Becky continues her father's traditions; she’s a paddler, artist, filmmaker, environmentalist and educator and is currently looking forward to her 33rd season of teaching her Classic Canoeing courses on Meech Lake near Ottawa. Reid is also an artist and accredited flat-water and white-water instructor. Together this husband and wife team have travelled North America, Europe, the UK and Scandinavia teaching and spreading their love and passion for the perfect vessel: the canoe. They are pleased to have this opportunity to honour and remember the life and work of their dear friend Ken Buck, the author, teacher and longtime cameraman for Bill Mason.
