SUPERPOWER PARTHIA:
COINS OF ORODES II & HIS KIN
by MICHAEL CONNOR

The next meeting of the Ancient Coin Club of Los Angeles will take place Sunday March 10, 2019 in the Community Room at the Sherman Oaks Galleria starting at 1:00 PM. The meeting will feature a presentation by Michael Connor titled Superpower Parthia: Coins of Orodes II and His Kin. Michael will review the coins of Orodes, and Orodes' father, brother, and sons minted when Parthia was at its peak.

The Sherman Oaks Galleria is located at 15301 Ventura Boulevard at the junction with Sepulveda Boulevard in Sherman Oaks just northwest of the intersection of the Ventura and San Diego Freeways. Park in the Galleria parking lot (we validate your parking, so parking is free). The Community Room is on Level 1 of the Rotunda, one floor below the cinema.

LAST MEETING

The feature presentation at the February 10, 2019 meeting was given by guest speaker Glenn Barnett. Glenn discussed points raised in his recent book Emulating Alexander: How Alexander the Great's Legacy Fueled Rome's Wars with Persia from a numismatic perspective. It was a well delivered presentation much appreciated by the audience. This was Glenn Barnett's second talk to the Club. The first, on Zenobia, Empress of the East, was delivered June 11, 1995! Emulating Alexander: How Alexander the Great's Legacy Fueled Rome's Wars With Persia is available on Amazon.

President Geisinger thanked Glenn Barnett and presented him with a well-earned Certificate of Appreciation. Secretary Michael Connor reported that the ACCLA website received its 1 millionth visitor on January 30, 2019. The Club Facebook page has 1,563 followers. Vice-President Roger Burry announced upcoming meeting programs. The March 10 meeting will feature a presentation by Michael Connor titled Superpower Parthia: Coins of Orodes II and his Kin. At the April 14 meeting, Bob Effler will talk on coin cleaning and conservation. David Michaels will talk on Walking Hadrian’s Wall at the May 12 meeting.

RECENT ACQUISITIONS

Caracalla Tetradrachm

Barry Rightman recently acquired this character-rich, well-pedigreed, silver tetradrachm (28.3 mm, 12.34 g, 12 h) of Caracalla (198-217 CE) minted in the city of Emesa in Seleucis and Pieria. The obverse features his laureate bust right, with AVT K•M•A•••ANTΩNЄINO-C•CЄ•B• around. The reverse features an eagle standing facing, head left, with wings spread, holding a wreath in its beak with the letter A (Officina) to its upper right, and the radiate crowned bust of the deity Shamash between the eagle's legs, ΔHMAPX ЄΞ VΠATOC TO Δ around. Prieur 960 (this coin); cf. Bellinger 187. Ex Michel Prieur Collection; ex Robert Gait Collection, 673. (Image courtesy of CNG)

Dramatic Biga

Kenneth Friedman recently added a few more denarii to his Republican collection including this scarce denarius (3.88 g, 9 h) of Sextus Iulius Caesar minted 129 BCE. The obverse has the helmeted head of Roma facing right with X below her chin and an anchor behind. The reverse shows Venus driving a biga while being crowned from behind by Cupid, with ROMA above; SEX•IVLI below, and CAISAR in the exergue. Crawford proposes that the moneyer is Sextus Iulius Caesar, the Praetor of 123 BCE, that the reverse is a reference to the Iulii claim of descent from Venus by way of Aneas and Ascanius-Iulus, and that the anchor on the obverse should be taken as a reference to Aeneas’s arrival in Italy from overseas. Crawford 258/1.

Lovely Eagle and Serpent

This lovely, rare denarius (3.77 g, 7 h) of Quintus Pomponius Rufus minted in 73 BCE is another of Kenneth Friedman's recent acquisitions. The obverse shows the laureate head of Jupiter facing right, S•C behind, RVFVS upwards before. The reverse features an eagle perched on a scepter with its left foot and holding a wreath with its right, a snake behind the eagle's left wing, VI below the wreath, and Q•POMPONI below the scepter. Crawford indicates that the moneyer, Quintus Pomponius Rufus, is not otherwise known but possibly is a son of Cnaeus Pomponius, Tribune of the Plebs 90 BCE. He argues the eagle is merely an attribute of Jupiter and for Numa (from whom the Pomponii claimed descent) as the creator of the religion of the Republic. The coin is the prototype for the gold Koson stater (see Kenneth's ACTA ACCLA article). Crawford 398/1.

An Unbridled Horse From Larissa

Joseph Geisinger recently added this well-styled horse to his stable. Minted in Larissa, Thessaly about 350-300 BCE, the silver drachm (5.81 g) bears the three-quarters facing head of the nymph Larissa on the obverse. The reverse shows a magnificent, full-maned horse, its left foreleg raised, in the act of preparing to lie down, ΛΑΡ[ΙΣ] above / ΑΙΩΝ below. BCD 315. (Image courtesy of Pegasi Numismatics)
