Hey! I'm back. For those of you who have missed the newsletter, sorry! I've been pretty slack. But keen to keep this going to help you in the discipleship of your families.

Here's a little reminder of what you'll find in these newsletters:
  • Some encouragement from the Bible in regards to parenting/family stuff
  • Links to carefully selected articles to equip you on your journey
  • Reminders of upcoming events
  • An outline of what we're teaching at Kids' Arvo and Kids' Church this week - please check it out. It will help you chat with your kids about what they have learned and continue the learning at home
Today I want to hook you up with some resources to help engage your kids with the message of Jesus in the lead up to Easter. Lent - the traditional 40 day period leading up to Easter started on Wednesday. For centuries this has been used by Christians as a time for prayer, fasting and reflection in preparation for Easter. Whether you take 40 days or just a couple ,a rhythm like this can help you centre yourself on the reason for our hope and joy. These 2 resources below may help you and your family do just that.

Telling the Easter Story with Plastic Eggs

This is a brilliant idea! Jacqui (my wife) did this with our kids a couple of years ago and it was really memorable. You need an empty egg carton, 12 plastic eggs (Target have 10 packs buy here or in store) and a few different things to put in the eggs. Beginning 12 days out you open one egg at a time, reading from a different part of the Easter narratives as they uncover the related object inside the egg (e.g. perfume, silver coins, donkey, nail etc.). It culminates on Easter Sunday where you will open an empty egg, representing the tomb. Full details are here: Easter Egg Carton.

Jesus Storybook Bible Lent Resource

This is similar to the one I sent out for advent. It has a reading for each day of lent, with catch up days if you have gotten behind (because we all need that). It also has a colouring page attached. If the 40 day plan is a bit much, then I would reccomend just reading the last week of suggested readings together. You can download it as a PDF for free here: Jesus Storybook Bible Lent Plan.
If you don't have a copy of the Jesus Storybook Bible you can purchase it as an ebook here (JSSB ebook) or, go into Warringah Christian book shop and pick one up (call ahead on 99717188).

I hope you can make the most of these resources. We look forward to celebrating Easter with you and your family.

Also, just a quick heads up. We have a Kids' Arvo family BBQ on the 22nd. We'd love to see you there, even if your kids don't usually come. See below for more info.

Peace...

Suggested Reading

  • Great advice on How to teach your children to handle peer pressure. "Peer pressure tends to be something parents address when a child reaches early or late adolescence... Rather than waiting until they are under pressure, begin laying the groundwork about five years before they can be expected to deal with an issue."
  • And... Discipling Kids Is a Long Game of Small Interactions. "As parents we must remember that spiritual growth—just like growth of all other kinds—is usually a slow, gentle, and even painful process rather than a series of big leaps."
