University Public Worship

Memorial Church has historically been an important center of spiritual and ceremonial life at Stanford University since the church was dedicated in 1903. It is open to anyone, wherever you may be on your spiritual journey. Please join us at University Public Worship, Sunday mornings at 10:00 am in this spectacular and sacred venue.

Professor Linda Woodhead, Professor of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, Lancaster University (UK), will be preaching. There will be a talk-back lunch with Professor Woodhead in the Round Room after the service.

Compline: An Evening Service of Song

A reflective, contemplative 30-minute service of hymns, anthems and chant sung by Stanford and local choral ensembles in the tranquil candlelit ambiance of Memorial Church. All are welcome. Sundays, 9:00 – 9:30 pm during the academic year with the exception of university holidays and academic breaks.

Leading a Meaningful Life: A Conversation with Krista Tippett

Sughra Ahmed, Associate Dean for Religious Life, will be in conversation with Krista Tippett on matters of personal values, beliefs, and motivations in order to gain a deeper understanding of life’s meaning. Q&A with the audience will follow the conversation. No tickets required for this free event.

Krista Tippett is a Peabody award-winning broadcaster, National Humanities Medalist, and New York Times bestselling author. She founded and leads The On Being Project, hosts the globally esteemed On Being public radio show and podcast.

Words and Silences: An Evening with Naomi Shihab Nye and Ryushin Paul Haller

Join award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye and Ryushin Paul Haller, former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center, for an evening that will bring together poetic and contemplative traditions to explore how simple engagements with language and stillness can help us find not only our place and path and but also draw us close to blessings beyond knowing.
