PCLG News

June 2019
Dear PCLG followers,

IIED  and the IUCN Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group (SULi) have been engaged by the Luc Hoffmann Institute to undertake a piece of work exploring potential incentive mechanisms for community-based conservation, beyond trophy hunting and tourism.  As we know, in Africa in particular, these are the most commonly used mechanisms to make wildlife management an attractive option to communities. But we also know that a sole reliance on these two mechanisms is, problematic for various reasons.

So, we want to identify alternative incentives for conservation that can complement, replace, or enhance the viability of these approaches. Some have already been tried within the wildlife conservation sector (in Africa and elsewhere) – such as rhino impact bonds and wildlife harvesting or various sorts. Others have not been widely applied in the wildlife sector (if at all) but have been used elsewhere for example in participatory forest management and community-based fisheries management and have the potential to be transferred to wildlife.

We are particularly interested in economic incentives but also social and cultural incentive mechanisms including strengthened rights and recognition.

We plan to develop an inventory of approaches and look at where they have been applied and with what success (from both a conservation and livelihoods perspective) with a view to exploring what has the potential to be scaled up/replicated.

We’d be REALLY interested to hear from anyone who can provide specific examples of interesting schemes/mechanisms – from Africa and beyond and from the wildlife sector and beyond.
.
Please do send over any relevant documents or web links you may be aware of,  or point us to relevant sources of information to explore or people/organisations to talk to. Or to other reviews/initiatives you are aware of that have tried to do a similar kind of assessment.

Please send relevant information to me (dilys.roe@iied.org) and feel free to contact me for any further details or clarifications

Many thanks
Dilys
