What's happening at ULR?

Project Ready students learn about activism

ROCHESTER, NY(February 19, 2019) - Five students from the Project Ready program performed monologues for community leaders and staff at Action for a Better Community for the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Event. The Urban League of Rochester partnered with Action for a Better Community, Anthony Jordan Health Center and Greater Rochester Housing Partnership for the event centered around the theme "Standing Strong." Each student performed a monologue focused on injustice in the African American community. Students chose a cause or a person to focus on for their presentations. The purpose of the event was to help students apply historical events to current events to understand how activism promotes change. Some topics covered included Rodney King, #MeToo Movement, Black Lives Matter, Colin Kapernick and more. The presentation concluded with students understanding how to apply different elements of each figure or movement to understand how they can invoke change in our community.

Black Scholars Program hosts College and Career Fair

ROCHESTER, NY (February 16, 2019) - The Black Scholars Program hosted The College Workshop and Career Fair at Roberts Weslyan College Saturday February 16th. More than 90 students and parents came out to the event. It provided information about college preparation and career exploration for high school students.  More than 18 community and professional organizations attend the Career Fair, giving students a chance to learn more about fields like engineering, law enforcement, elder care, city government and more. A number of colleges and universities also attended the event. Many students of color enter into their senior year of high school unprepared for college. This event aimed to give students and parents the tools they need to succeed while providing an interactive platform to ask questions.

ULR's Pathways to Justice producing positive results

ROCHESTER, NY (February 2019) - Pathways to Justice is a mentorship program at ULR. The goal is to foster meaningful relationships between mentors and mentees. In addition to group activities, mentors and mentees often have their own outings together to connect on a more personal level.  Mentor Melinda Franzwa and mentee Cadeeja Tanksley visited Geva Theatre earlier this month to see The Magician's Daughter. Melinda and Cadeeja both thought it was a comedy, but they quickly learned the play was a drama focused on a father-daughter relationship from the eyes of the daughter. The pair enjoyed discussing the production and spending time together. Melinda and Cadeeja are just one example of the positive relationships formed through the Pathways to Justice program.

ASA students honor African American Heroes

(from left to right) Jaheem Barnes, 12, Shamere Brooks, 14, and Shabrion Brooks, 13
ROCHESTER, NY (February 28, 2019) - In honor of Black History Month, students in the Afterschool Academy at ULR were given a project to recognize the accomplishments of a few African American pioneers, heroes, and trailblazers. Students were assigned different figures in all types of fields including, justice, education, entertainment and more. Students paired up with classmates for the assignment and had to present their projects to the group. Shabrion Brooks, 13, was assigned Thurgood Marshall as her figure. Shabrion says after learning more and researching him, she is now inspired to pursue a career as an attorney. She says she enjoyed learning about how he overcame obstacles to become the first Black Supreme Court Justice.
Employee Spotlight
John Smith works in the facilities and maintenance department, but he's always going above and beyond his job description to meet the needs of the organization and the community. He is responsible for maintaining all Urban League facilities throughout the city. On top of that, he is often spotted brushing snow off his colleagues cars and anything else he can do to help. After spending 11 years at ULR, he retired in September of 2018, but returned in December of 2018. John says he came back because he enjoys the people and the job. In addition to his service at ULR, he is also a Vietnam Veteran. John retired at the end of February again, but he won't stay away for too long. He plans to pop in and out to help out from time to time.

Please recognize your colleagues for a job well done, email kjones@ulr.org with nominations.
Blast from the Past - May 1989

Urban League of Rochester hosted the Rochester's Male Chefs event as a fundraiser for the Black Scholars Program. Nineteen men from the Rochester area participated. The participants were not trained as professional chefs. Each contestant prepared a specialty dish and guests sampled the fine cuisine cooked by the men. Thirty years later, this event has been renamed Distinguished Male Cooks and it continues to be a significant fundraiser for the Black Scholars Program.
