Sharisa Heier started in her position on March 1st as the departmental Administrative Associate. She is housed in 232 FIC and will support Dr. Weller in hissupport and handling of departmental teaching, research and Extension programs. Sharisa comes to UNL from American Life and Security Corp., and its parent organization, Midwest Holdings, Inc. where she most recently served as Senior Executive Assistant, Travel Coordinator, Assistant Secretary for Corporate Board and Shareholder Services Manager. During her approximately 18 years with Midwest Holding, she served in a number of roles. Please stop in and greet her.
With Sharisa’s arrival, Julie Reiling will transition into new (and back to some old) responsibilities. Julie will remain involved with sensory, labeling and product development projects with the FPC. Due to Julie’s experience and institutional knowledge, she will remain the point person for all things related to the FIC building, room and building access and the liaison with the landlord. Additionally, Julie will assist in tracking and recording FPC agreement and financial paperwork in concert with the NIC Business Center.

Dr. Andrew Benson was elected as new Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, an honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). Election is through a highly selective, peer-review process, based on records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology. Dr. Benson was among 108 other new elected Fellows for 2019.

Dr. Jeyam Subbiah, and other professors and students at UNL are developing a video game called “AgPocalypse: 2050.” The game will put players in farming roles, where they focus on the four main aspects of the Nebraskan agroecosystem: corn, water, ethanol and beef. The research-based models behind the game look at multiple factors, such as economics, weather, climate and animal science. Junsi Yang, a Ph.D. student, has been selected to receive the 2019 American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) Honored Student Award. The award consists of a certificate, a $500 travel allowance, and complimentary lodging and registration for the recipient to attend the AOCS Annual Meeting, where she will present an award lecture. Junsi is advised by Dr. Ozan Ciftci.

From cow to cone: the 15 students in Dr. Robert Hutkins’ Dairy Technology class have gone on two recent field trips. First, they paid a visit to the Prairieland Dairy farm, where they observed a large 1,400 cow milking operation. It was a frigid day, but the cows did not seem to mind.
Later in February, they went to the Blue Bunny ice cream manufacturing plant in Iowa. This is one of the largest ice cream facilities in the world. The VIP tour was a great opportunity for students to view the manufacture of ice cream and novelty products. All of the super-fast production lines were automated, and several even used robotics. Despite the cold (almost as cold outside as the blast freezers inside!), it was a great educational experience.

Recently, 17 Biosafety Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) for microlabs and chemlabs have been revised. Notification of the SOPs updated and a brief description of the change(s) have been published in the EHS website under the Biosafety Category of Safe Operating Procedures you can see the revision date in parentheses after the SOP name. Lab managers and workers should please carefully review all the Biosafety SOPs with the (12/18) or (1/19) revision date that do or may apply to your research. Lab Animal Care Assistant

The Gnotobiotic Mouse Facility (located on East Campus behind the Vet Sciences building in the Life Sciences Annex) The gnotobiotic mouse facility is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual to help care for our mouse colony. Responsibilities include working with mice in sterile environments; preparing the food, water, and bedding for the mice and maintaining the sterile conditions of the isolators using aseptic techniques. Performing periodic microbiological quality-control checks and assisting lab personnel with various mouse-related tasks. The position is for Fall 2018 and possibly longer.

Technical Project Manager

The Project Manager reports to the Executive Director of the Nebraska Food for Health Center (NFHC). This position will serve as primary project coordinator and will manage the research output/product development lifecycle to meet the mission and goals of NFHC and help develop the UNL Maize Genetics Program (MGP). Works multi-campus with various teams of subject matter experts across the NFHC pipeline and MGP infrastructure to ensure effective communication for discovery, translational animal models, and human clinical trials.
