Standard Solar RE:NEW Monthly

The Tariffs Take A Bite

The latest solar jobs report from our friends at The Solar Foundation isn't great. After almost a decade of continuous rapid growth, solar jobs have dropped two years in a row as a result of Trump tariffs. And while these tariffs haven't stopped the industry, they have slowed what had been one of the great job-generating stories in the past 10 years.

Still, we persevere. While we continue to face challenges at the national level, the solar industry continues its fights on the state level - and we are winning. And state-level wins can add up to a national win if we stay focused and continue our push for positive #solar policies.

For Standard Solar, 2019 has been a whirlwind already…in the best way possible. We just announced one of our largest projects yet - a 27 MW package of projects in New York and Rhode Island. We are thrilled to have worked with Freepoint Solar on the deal. We will own, operate, finance and develop these projects. It's one of our largest single-project expansions yet - which indicates to us that 2019 is going to be our biggest year yet.

In this edition of the newsletter, we discuss:

  • Why winning state-level policy battles can add up to real change at the national level;
  • We profile our project with Washington, DC and our goal of solarizing our nation's capital, one solar array at a time;
  • How the community solar revolution is coming your way, and;
  • Our newest video on how educational institutions can go solar to reduce their carbon footprint and be good stewards of the environment.

Enjoy!

Policy Perspective

Little Wins Can Lead To Massive Advances

Since the founding of the Solar Energy Industries Association in 1974, the solar industry has focused on national policy as the crux of what would shape it across the country.

Obviously, for most of the industry’s history, that approach made perfect

sense. Between the investment tax credit (ITC) and the 1603 solar grant program, our attention needed to focus at the federal level. One false move there, and the light of the solar industry could have been extinguished before it had its chance to shine.

ROCKVILLE, Md.—February 20, 2019 — Standard Solar, Inc., a leading solar energy company specializing in the development and financing of solar electric systems nationwide, today announced it has signed an agreement to acquire 27 megawatts (MW) of distributed generation (DG) solar projects in New York and Rhode Island from Freepoint Solar LLC. Standard Solar will engineer, build, finance, own and operate all five projects which are expected to commence construction over the next six to nine months.

The three DG projects in Rhode Island, totaling approximately 13 MW, are part of the states’ Renewable Energy Growth (REG) Program. Rhode Island’s REG Program supports the development of 560 MW of new renewable energy projects in the state between 2015 and 2020 and enables customers to sell their generation output under long-term tariffs at a fixed price.
