Spring Steelhead Guide Trips

Hello Fly Anglers,

After a little break it looks like foul weather is back again. It's a shame because the Manistee River got a push of fresh fish recently and the fishing has been good. Based on that and the recent springs I'd suggest getting in one of the guides boats soon. March may be the most productive part of the run. Pre runoff, go figure!

Speaking of pre runoff read my article below regarding what I think are the five most productive spring steelhead flies. In addition I added a lot of information on how to tie them and when to fish them.

Show season is wrapping up with the grand finale, the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo. Information about timing, location and speaking schedule is below. If you attend stop by the booth and say hello. The guys and I look forward to seeing you.

Also below is an article I wrote about activities that will keep you from getting the winter fishing blues.

We are actively filling our calendars for prime times this year. It is time to get your dates if you are looking for something specific i.e; Prime Hatches, Spring and Fall Steelhead, or Trout streamer trips. It is also time to book the Garden River if you want to make that trip. It’s almost full! The easiest way to get a day in the calendar is to call Cherie at 231-228-7135 she has all of our calendars and can give you the options available.

Have a great early season, when winter finally breaks.

Capt. Chuck

Five Top Spring Steelhead Flies

Read this blog post regarding what I believe to be the top five spring steelhead flies. Included are links to tying instructions and a lot of information about how and when to fish them.

Good luck!
Five Things to Do to Combat the Winter Blues
This winter has been one for the record books, extreme cold and heavy snows have kept most of us indoors. If you are like me being stuck indoors is as close to hell on earth as I can imagine.

Below is my list of things that I do to keep my sanity while waiting for mother nature to loosen her grip and let me get out in play.

  1. Attend fly shows and fishing club meetings. You will be surrounded by like minded folks and have lots of opportunities to talk fishing to your hearts content.
  2. An obvious one is tie flies. Filling your boxes with your go to stuff will give you a jump start on the season. Also a lot of fly shops offer fly tying demos from local fly tying experts. Going to those tying events will teach you lots of new tying ideas. Or check out the Hawkins YouTube channel as we update it with new patterns and tips and tricks.
  3. Organize and clean your gear. If you are like me, by the end of season my gear bags look like something exploded in there. Taking the time to reset and clean your stuff, you will appreciate the effort when season starts.
  4. Plan next season's adventures! Local or exotic destinations with old friends and new need advance planning. Figure when, where and with whom is a lot of fun. Anticipation is a great thing.
  5. Go fishing even though it is winter. As guides, winter is about the only time we get to fish together. There are steelhead in the rivers all winter, many trout sections are open also. Just change your tactics a little and be prepared for the cold but get out there when there are small breaks in the weather.
Though at times it doesn't feel like winter will break we all know spring will come. Using the winter months to get prepared will help you keep your sanity.

See you in spiring!

The Midwest Fly Show

March 9 and 10 are the dates for the annual Midwest Fly Fishing Expo. Hawkins Outfitters will have a booth and a bunch of my guides will be joining. We look to reconnect with all of you, meet some new folks and book some trips.

As usual I will be speaking Saturday and Sunday, 2:15 and 1:00 respectively. This years topic is "The six things you can do this season to become a better angler". Please join me and be ready to ask questions.

We look forward to seeing you there.
