Your Life Purpose and the Promise of Spring

I am always astounded at how Nature shows us her intelligence. An acorn always becomes an oak tree – the best oak tree that it can possibly become. And then when it has completed this manifestation, the oak tree does not look at it’s neighbour and say wow your prettier than me, or I’m bigger than you. No comparisons. No judgements. Only the expression of the purpose that was always in the seed.

When we had the farm and were planting seedlings in the greenhouse in March the alyssum seeds were like grains of pepper – so minutely small. Within 6 weeks they were blooming in purples, pinks and whites and filling the greenhouse with the most magnificent fragrance. My favourites were the dianthus aka Sweet William. They manifested like little girls’ party dresses in the most amazing shades of pink I have ever seen. And when I walked into their presence it was as if they were all chattering or singing to each other with the pure delight of expressing their purpose.

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) the season of spring is the element of Wood and it is all about expressing our purpose. Who am I? What am I here for? The answer for each of us is fundamentally unique but for sure the indication that we are on the right track is a sense of peace and happiness and joy in the activity we are engaged in.

I’m not talking about frivolity. I’m talking about a sense of wonder that somehow my life is ‘on track’ for fulfilling my purpose. I’m talking about the reason we get up each morning – with enthusiasm or dragging our tired bones out of bed?

For example, Baba and I are working with a dog trainer who has wanted to work with animals since she was 5 years old. She is totally happy with what she is doing and it shows in the way she connects with us, in her demeanour, in the light in her eyes.

I am convinced that each of us came here with a unique and special purpose. When we are fulfilling that purpose it shines forth into the world and provides inspiration to others.
 
So this spring I encourage you to watch the flowers emerge from their dark and cold winter retreat to fulfill their purpose. I ask you to check in with your hearts to know if you are fulfilling yours.
 
While I was snowed in a couple of weeks ago I read a profoundly moving book called “When Breath Becomes Air”. It’s the story of a young man who, in the last months of one of the most challenging residencies in western medicine – Neurosurgery, is diagnosed with lung cancer. That’s where the story begins. This remarkable story also provided me with an opportunity to review my own reality. Am I on track with my purpose? Am I being a faithful caretaker of these precious energies from Nature (Pacific Essences®) who gave themselves into our keeping? To check in with what is my capacity to “be with” the unexpected and unpredictable?

I squealed with delight last Friday when some early crocuses who had been flattened by the unusual and unexpected snow and buried beneath it for at least 8 days, appeared again all straight and in full bloom. And asked myself – do I have the capacity to respond with such grace and ease when my plans go awry?
