The theme for Library and Information Week 2019, running from 20–26 May, is Truth, Integrity, Knowledge. The campaign focuses on 10 of the ways that library and information professionals promote and support these values. ALIA has created Library and Information Week 2019 merchandise including enamel pins; bookmarks; notebooks; pencils; sticker packs; and a promo pack, all available for purchase through the ALIA Shop

ALIA has produced a news release on ParentsNext providers ignoring government advice and is asking library staff to report any providers misusing libraries by emailing details to advocacy@alia.org.au.

ALIA would like to thank everyone who contributed their feedback to our 2019 federal election agenda, your comments have helped us to fine tune our ‘asks’. The revised agenda can be found on our website.

ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher was interviewed on ABC Radio NationalSaturday Extra, about digitisation alongside National Archives of Australia Director-General, David Fricker. You can listen to the segment online. 

The second Truth, Integrity, Knowledge (TIK) blog post is live. Helen Ebsworth, ALIA Board Director, talks about how information should be free of bias, manipulation and interference and that information should be accessible. You can read the post online. Conference papers and presentations for ALIA Information Online 2019 are now available on the website. To locate the papers visit the speakers page and scroll down to the speaker where you can see the documents  under each biography. ALIA has put together a great range of merchandise for National Simultaneous Storytime 2019 (NSS2019). We have maracas, tote bags, stickers and more. CleverPatch has created a craft ebook as well as a guide to making NSS2019 wind chimes and Scholastic Australia has created teachers' notes. For more information see our website and don't forget to register.

The Herald Sun has published the article 'Experts fear we’ll soon be raising illiterate generations as Aussie kids’ speech issues hit worst levels', which quotes ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher, on the need to improve the literacy skills of Australian children. 

The early bird registrations for the New Librarians' Symposium 2019 (NLS9), running 5–7 July, opened on 22 March 2019. There are also several bursaries available. For more information see the website. 

The report of the statutory review of the Enhancing Online Safety Act 2015, to which ALIA made a submission, is now available to read on the website.

ALIA Members are invited to take up a special offer to attend the CBCA National Conference 2019 to be held on 31 May to 2 June in Canberra. ALIA Members can book and receive the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Member rates. This special Member benefit is brought to you by ALIA and CBCA. IFLA has created a series called the 10 Minute Library Advocate. The latest idea, 'Learn a Great Library Story', comes from ALIA CEO, Sue McKerracher. For more information see the website.

Public library news

The ALIA Australian Public Library Alliance has released a document of its achievements from 2016–2018 and ALIA Australian Public Library Alliance National strategy and action plan 2019–2022. For more information see the website. 

The Australian Web Archive is an enormous achievement by the National Library of Australia. The database archive holds more than 20 years of Australian government and official websites, including Floriade, the 2000 Sydney Olympic games, and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The platform is supported on Trove, the National Library of Australia

Librarians' Choice is closing down after three years of recommending and rating books. The April top 10 will be the final list, while the website and social media will be shut down on 30 June 2019. ALIA would like to thank the Librarians' Choice creators Megan Tolnay and Melanie Mutch for their magnificent contribution to the industry. 

2019 is the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages and there are many ways that libraries can get involved, from highlighting Indigenous works in your library’s collection to hosting talks from local members of Indigenous communities. For more information see the website.

Readings has released the shortlist for the Readings Children's Book Prize for 2019. The shortlisted titles include The Peacock Detectives by Carly Nugent; Elementals: Ice Wolves by Amie Kaufman; and Ottlie Colter and the Narroway Hunt by Rhiannon Williams. The winning book will be announced in late April 2019.

The Australian Book Industry Awards longlist has been announced and includes the categories Biography Book of the Year; Book of the Year for Older Children (ages 13+); and General Fiction Book of the Year. You can read the longlist online. 

The NSW Premiers' Literary Awards has announced the shortlists for the award categories. These categories include the Ethel Turner Prize for Young People's Literature; the Betty Roland Prize for Scriptwriting; and the Indigenous Writers' Prize. For more information see the website. 

The shortlist for the 2019 Stella Prize has been announced. The shortlisted novels include Pink Mountain on Locust Island by Jamie Marina Lau; Little Gods by Jenny Ackland; and Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucashenko. The shortlist can be found online. 

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies is asking people to respond to a survey on the current state of Indigenous languages in Australia. 

Registrations are now open for the free Be Connected eSafety webinars. These presentations help older Australians stay safer online with topics including: All you need to know about data and public Wi-Fi; Can you spot a scam? Tax-time edition; Safer online shopping and banking; and Staying safe on Facebook. To make a booking visit the Be Connected bookings page.

Australian Capital Territory


The new site for the ACT Heritage Library and ArchivesACT officially opened on 14 March 2019. 

The ACT Government's response to the Standing Committee on Environment and Transport and City Services Inquiry into ACT Libraries is now available. 

 
New South Wales


The NSW Government has pledged $500,000 per annum funding from 2020 for Vision Australia library services, following a funding campaign supported by ALIA and other stakeholders.  

Local council plans to include a new creative space at Wangi Wangi Library, has reportedly raised concerns that this would negatively impact the library's existing collections. 

After exhaustive campaigning, Lapstone Public School was promised a new school library before the NSW state election by Rob Stokes, NSW Education Minister. ALIA was pleased to offer support and promote Lapstone Public School's campaign. 

Kiama Library has launched its new digital platform, Explore Kiama's Past. The platform allows interested parties to explore the library's collection of historical documents. 

Cabonne will soon have a new library and community centre. The new space will include indoor and outdoor meeting areas, and learning facilities. 


Northern Territory 


ALIA has received an anonymous donation to make a $1,500 grant available for an ALIA Member from the Northern Territory to attend the New Librarians’ Symposium 2019 (NLS9) in Adelaide. To apply, email events@alia.org.au saying how attending NLS9 will enhance your career development, along with a letter from your employer supporting your application for the grant. Applications close 30 April 2019. 
 

Queensland


Mossman Library, has received funding through the Public Library Strategic Priorities Grant. The library has invested the money in an interactive touch screen and a virtual reality set. 


Victoria


The Public Libraries Victoria (PLV) Executive has endorsed the 2019–2022 PLV Strategic Plan and circulated it to key stakeholders, it has also finalised the Action Plan and has commenced implementation of priorities. 
 
The inaugural Public Libraries Victoria Conference, running 16–17 September 2019, is calling for abstracts. To submit an abstract, please contact Katrina Knox, Executive Officer kknox@mav.asn.au by 2 April 2019. The Minister for Local Government, the Hon. Adem Somyurek MP, has confirmed that he plans to attend.
 
The Libraries Change Lives campaign continues to roll on.  A number of activities including an MP engagement event at Parliament House are planned over the next three months.

The Dingley Village Library and Harold Box Hall, Kingston, will be refurbished in 2019. Construction is set to be completed by the end of the year. 
International news

ILFA has created the report 'A Social Justice Mission: Libraries, Employment and Entrepreneurship'. 

The IFLA/Systematic Public Library of the Year award is open. To qualify, the library must be newly built or housed in buildings not previously used as a library and have been completed between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018. The award will be presented at the IFLA annual meeting and is accompanied by a $5,000 USD (more than $7,000 AUD) prize. Applications close on 15 April 2019.

IFLA has announced new grants for its World Library and Information Congress 2019 these include the Margreet Wijnstroom Grant for attending the IFLA WLIC 2019 and the International Librarians Network IFLA WLIC Grant 2019. Please see the website for application deadlines

Registrations for the IFLA Public Libraries Satellite, running 21–22 August 2019, in Rome, Italy, are open. The two day seminar will focus on the evolving concept of ‘library’ and how this impacts on library design. For more information see the website. 

The World Intellectual Property Organization is seeking applicants for three fellowships with the Accessible Books Consortium. Applications should be sent by 25 March 2019 to abc.fellows@wipo.int. For more information see the website. 

There are concerns that the Trump administration 2019 budget, 'A budget for a better America', will negatively affect public library funding. 

Rare collection items at the New York Public Library will go on display in a new exhibition space that is set to be built. These items include a draft of the US Constitution; a letter from Christopher Columbus; and a copy of A Christmas Carol that Charles Dickens used and updated when he travelled the US. Pennsylvania, US, is set to have a new public library in 2022. The proposed library will be two and a half times bigger than the existing library and will feature a large auditorium. 

CITYLAB has published the article 'A History of the American Public Library'. 

Coastline Library System, Oregon, US, has abolished fines for children's books, and the Cleveland Public Library, US, has abolished library fines for its users. 

OCLC has announced the 15 small US public libraries involved in the 2019 Small libraries create smart spaces project. These libraries include the Fayette Public Library, La Grange, Texas; the Lopez Island Library, Lopez Island, Washington; and the Burnsville Public Library, Burnsville, West Virginia. These libraries serve just over 10,900 users combined. The project aims to improve interactive spaces in small libraries. For more information see the website.

The American Library Association has produced the report Hateful Conduct in Libraries: Supporting Library Workers and Patrons.

The local council for the River Center Branch Library in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana, US, has approved an additional $2.7 million USD (more than $3.8 million AUD) for library refurbishments

Ottawa, Canada, is set to receive a new 'superlibrary' by 2024. The new library will reportedly be five stories high and include a large auditorium, a cafeteria and a children's discovery centre.

Authors Ian Rankin and Val McDermid have argued against the closure of 16 public libraries in Scotland.

Children from St Michael's Junior School in Galleywood, Essex, UK, have protested the closure of the local public Galleywood Library by hugging the library.

The public library Puzzle Media Thionville, France, has an innovative design and layout, including fake grass throughout the building. 

The Espoo Library, Finland, has won the 2019 Library of the Year Award, as part of the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards. The library has been described by the judges as 'a fine example to the world of an open and innovative service for everyone, with an enormously successful reading challenge open to all ages'. 
Campaigns, events and programming ideas
The ALIA Campaigns and Events page provides ideas for all year round advocacy. These campaigns and events give you the opportunity to run fun, informative activities in the library, online and through social media every month of the year.
Professional learning
ALIA Members are able to freely access a collection of LIS ebooks from EBL and can investigate the Public Library Specialisation of the ALIA PD Scheme that recognises the specific skills needed for the public library sector. Members can also sign up for the monthly PD Postings enewsletter.
