Happy March Everyone!
Well it's been a crazy time weather wise in the Capital! And if you've been walking outside I hope you were smart enough to buy some cleats. The ice lumps on the side roads across the city make it much safer to be driving than walking.
There is an interesting article about a new act in Ontario called the Golden Girls Act, which may interest many. If you remember the popular Golden Girls sitcom, this new act opens up more opportunities for those types of living situations - which is a good thing. This may give a few more options that are not as pricey as the Retirement Home resorts lifestyle but still offer comfort, companionship and security.
We'll try to keep abreast of more of these upcoming changes and hope they start appearing in Ottawa soon. Particularly the home sharing type app on placing good candidates together.
Don't forget to check the events calendar. Of note is a gala event on March 24 - The Chronicles of Narnia - the Lion, the Wish and the Wardrobe which is being put on in concert with the Algonquin College Event Management Program. It's in aid of the Children's Wish Foundation and is sure to be an interesting event.
It's also Fraud Prevention Month and the RCMP is going to be on hand at the Bank of Canada Museum for the next two weekends to with tips on how to recognize counterfeit bills. Not that you likely need that information, but that location can be a nice outing in the winter.
Happy Upcoming St. Patrick's Day and enjoy the month!

Tess Kalinowski / Toronto Star
Louise Bardswich is one of four women in their late 60s and early 70s who have become widely known as the Golden Girls of Port Perry, Ont.
Like their fictional counterparts, the Port Perry foursome live under one roof with communal dining, living room and kitchen. Each maintains a spacious private ensuite bedroom. Their downtown heritage home has been renovated to include accessibility features and a suite for a live-in caregiver if required.
But the arrangement that makes so much sense would never have been possible at one time. After a yearlong battle with the Township of Scugog, until the Ontario Human Rights Commission stepped in and the township parked it's objections. read more... (photo: Fred Thornhill for the Toronto Star)

Ottawa Citizen
In 2018 alone these scams cost Canadians a reported $6 million and police believe the true dollar figure is much higher with many victims not reporting their losses.
This article discusses the take down of an illegal call centre in India. Great work by the RCMP! However, beware that there are many such scams popping up all the time.
The participants were relatively healthy seniors, living in their own homes and not suffering from serious cognitive impairment or physical illness, although due to their age, they were dealing with varying degrees of frailty. read more...

Our August 2018 newsletter mentioned a similar program happening in the US and a pilot project starting in Toronto.
HomeShare Canada provides information to groups looking to make arrangements in their communities. A number of these are set up in Ontario, but not yet in Ottawa.
HomeShare programs: aim to meet identified needs within their own communities; provide guidelines for the operation of the program; manage the applications process. Often they screen applicants, match them individually and provide support.
Another article published in the Toronto Star last summer offers some pertinent information about the benefits of such an arrangement, such as discounted rents for the tenant in exchange for help with household chores. But it's worthwhile to note that every article suggests such things as police checks. read more...
