THE HIGHLIGHTS

Trump is catching up with Kim Jong Un.

THE BACKGROUND.

The US and North Korea have never really gotten along. Hint: over the past couple years, Prez Trump’s been exchanging insults (cough, Little Rocketman, cough) with Kim Jong Un (who’s in turn called Trump a “mentally deranged dotard). These insults have escalated to threats of nuclear war. You read that right. But a few months ago, Trump decided to meet up with Kim Jong Un in person to talk denuclearization. And was soon proclaiming his love for North Korea’s leader. Scene, set.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Yesterday, the Prez headed to Vietnam for a second summit with Kim Jong Un. Expect to hear a lot a lot about North Korea’s nukes. As in Trump’s feeling positive about North Korea’s chances of denuclearizing...while the rest of the US gov is very very doubtful. And yesterday, Trump said he and Kim Jong Un are “happy” with how negotiations are going.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

What’s also a topic of discussion: ending the Korean War. ICYMI, the Korean War has been going on for decades. And even though there’s been an end to the fighting, there still hasn’t been an official end to the war itself. Expect to hear Kim Jong Un push to end the war while Trump pushes for denuclearization.

SO…?

Trump’s the first US prez to meet with a North Korean leader in person. TBD on if this relationship goes anywhere.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Today, Michael Cohen - aka Trump’s former lawyer - will testify before the House oversight committee. Expect to hear him allege that the Prez knew Roger Stone was chatting with WikiLeaks about the Democratic National Committee leak. Plus call Trump a “racist,” “conman,” and “cheat” - and allege that Trump knew about that Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, yesterday, the House of Reps passed a resolution to stop Trump’s national emergency declaration. Now, it’s up to the Senate to make things official. And in other news, the House is subpoenaing the Trump team over family separations at the US-Mexico border. Unclear what they’re looking to find out.

WORLD: Everyone is talking about Brexit. Recently, it came out that Prime Minister Theresa May is working on a new deal for the UK to ditch the European Union. Parliament’s expected to vote on the deal in March - plus vote on whether to delay Brexit or just leave the UK without a deal at all. This comes as the deadline for the UK to divorce the EU is almost up. Breath, bated. Speaking of which, Pakistan says it shot down “two Indian jets” flying over Kashmir. Quick refresher: for years, Pakistan and India have been fighting over Kashmir. This latest attack comes just a day after India reportedly killed a “ large number” of people at a military training camp.

USA: Yesterday, a new report came out saying that majority-white school districts received $23 billion (yes, with a b) more in funding than majority-nonwhite school districts back in 2016 - even though both groups had around the same number of students. Not good. In other news, yesterday, United Methodists voted to keep same-sex marriage illegal. Now, churches and clergy could face removal from the denomination if they don’t publicly agree that gay marriage is wrong by 2021. Meanwhile, AT&T is pulling out the streamers. Recently, a federal judge ruled that the biz can merge with Time Warner - coming after the Justice Dept disagreed.

WHAT TO KNOW

Horizontal skyscraper:” what’s being built in China right now. Future, is that you?

SAY WHAT?

“I made a fake pass and snuck in” - Jon M. Chu (as in the director of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’), admitting he snuck into the Oscars back in 2001. Crazy relatable.
