Brexit
Among other work as Shadow Brexit Minister, I spoke in a Parliamentary debate on the extension of Article 50 (see here). You can read my latest Brexit update on our call for a public vote if we cannot secure a better deal here.

Deportations
I challenged the Home Secretary on a mass deportation to Jamaica, asking him to personally review everyone on the flight. I am also opposing the removal of local Zimbabwean asylum seekers, in the light of increasing repression there – read more here.

Young Carers
I led a Westminster Hall debate seeking better support for Young Carers in which 20 MPs spoke. I pressed the Government to ensure schools and GPs identify and support young carers, among other actions.

Replace lost EU cash
I wrote to the Government demanding they match the £605m EU funding for economic regeneration which South Yorkshire was set to receive in 2021-27 as one of Europe’s poorest regions.

Immigration Bill Committee
I’m serving on the Immigration Bill Committee, which is preparing post-Brexit rules. We’re pushing for better protection of EU citizens’ rights and wider changes in the system.

Local Buses
I met with First South Yorkshire to discuss services and pricing issues which were raised in the Big Conversation, and have a meeting with Stagecoach planned next month. You can give them your feedback here.

University Funding
In a debate on University Financial Sustainability, I pressed the Universities Minister to adopt the APPG on International Students’ recommendation for an ambitious target to increase recruitment.

Unpaid Work Trials
I backed a debate challenging exploitative work trials, sharing a constituent’s experience of seven days’ unpaid training, for which she would be required to pay if leaving work within a year.

Benefits Assessment Interviews
During a debate on mental health and the benefits assessment process, I called for the Minister to make assessment interviews recordable to help avoid basic errors that applicants have to appeal.

Backing BAME Entrepreneurs
I launched the South Yorkshire African Caribbean Business and Enterprise Training Centre’s ‘110 Outlet’ project, which is supporting BAME entrepreneurs to get a start in business.
