Paul and the Snake

By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president

My wife doesn’t care for snakes. One thing she made me promise before we were married is that we would never have pet snakes or lizards in our house. I am not a huge fan of snakes myself and I was in love and so that was an easy promise to make! I have heard of many stories about escaped snakes in people’s homes and there is just something about the idea of having a snake loose in the house that is rather disconcerting to me.

My experiences with snakes have been limited: I played with little snakes that I would catch when I was young, have found it interesting to be around boa constrictors and other snakes at zoos, and have even been around rattlesnakes in the wild. Rattlesnakes plain scare me and I have no desire to have them anywhere close to me!

In today’s 28 for 1,000 reading of Acts 28, it brings you to the story of when Paul was shipwrecked. In Acts 28:3-5 you see that once they made it to shore everyone pitched in to make a fire...

Continue reading to see how Doug connects the story of Paul and the snake in Acts 28 to meeting the needs of our community!

This Week's Offering Goes to Local Church Ministries

What causes erosion? The gentle and incessant lapping of water, the prevailing westerly winds, the action of rain and snow beating down—all have their effect. When roots or foundations aren’t deeply secure, the elements slowly but surely wreak disintegration, and sand, rocks, and even structures topple into the lake.

This process is exactly what happens when little indiscretions and the world’s influences begin eating away at our Christian foundation. We don’t notice the erosion until it’s too late. That is why we are encouraged with these words: “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him” (Col. 2:6, 7). It is the daily commitment and attention to your root system that will keep your life standing tall and strong.

This Sabbath's offering is for Local Church Ministries. Help us help others come to Jesus and stay close to Him. And prevent spiritual erosion!
