DOE Announces Electricity Industry Technology and Practices Innovation Challenge


This contest is designed to tap into American ingenuity for ideas on how to modify or replace existing processes and procedures, the use of technology, and traditional energy industry practices to improve grid operations, with the goal of making the nation’s Bulk Power System stronger and more resilient. Under this Challenge, DOE’s Office of Electricity will seek ideas from industry, academia, and other innovators.

DOE Announces Electricity Industry Technology and Practices Innovation Challenge


Department of Energy (DOE) Under Secretary of Energy Mark Menezes announced $40M in FY19 funding for the Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI). The GMI, a crosscutting initiative involving all the applied energy offices, focuses on working with public and private partners to develop new tools and technologies that measure, analyze, predict, protect, and control the grid of the future. Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of Illinois

INCLUSION is an opportunity for 10 undergraduate students from underrepresented communities and Minority Serving Institutions to work in pairs with pairs of mentors on interdisciplinary socially-impactful INCLUSION research projects that develop and use open source software (OSS).

Deadline is March 1, 2019.

NM Space Grant Undergraduate Research Scholarship

The Undergraduate Research Scholarship opportunity is open to full time undergraduate students enrolled at any community college or university in the state of New Mexico. Applicants must be majoring in STEM fields. Scholarships are competitively awarded. These awards fund students to work on research at the level of $5,000 for two academic semesters.

Deadline is March 18.

The 2019 DataONE Summer Internship Program

DataONE is pleased to announce the availability of summer research internships for undergraduates, graduate students and recent postgraduates. The program is open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and postgraduates who have received their degree within the past five years. Given the broad range of projects, there are no restrictions on academic backgrounds or field of study. Interns will receive a stipend of $5,000 for participation, paid in two installments (one at the midterm and one at the conclusion of the program). In addition, required travel expenses will be borne by DataONE. Participation in the program after the mid-term is contingent on satisfactory performance.

Deadline is March 18.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: SEED AWARDS & COLLABORATIVE IWGs

We have two open Calls for Proposals for the New Mexico EPSCoR SMART Grid Center: Collaborative Innovation Working Groups (C-IWGs) and Infrastructure Seed Awards
C-IWGs primarily support groups of researchers (faculty, post-docs, and students), educators, and/or nationally recognized experts that seek to promote research innovation and integration in the area of smart grids, microgrids, cybersecurity, and cutting-edge research applications for advancing the country’s electricity production and delivery system. 
Infrastructure Seed Awards can be used to purchase research and teaching equipment and to pay for student researcher salaries, research supplies, and student conference travel.
