Reorganization Project is Complete!

Thanks to the incredible efforts of Toby and Missy (lots of heavy lifting!), we are thrilled to announce that the library reorganization project is complete and all of the books are in their new homes!

  • Adult Fiction, including new fiction, is all across the hall in what was formerly the Children's Room and is now the Reading Room (and our quiet space)
  • Mystery is all in the main room - new mystery books are in the free standing shelf to the right of the circulation desk (where new fiction used to be)
  • New DVDs are in the shelf directly in front of the circulation desk
  • Graphic novels and our teen collection (graphic novels, fiction, non-fiction, and audiobooks with a "Y" call number) are in the main room, directly behind the bank of computers to the left of the circulation desk
  • Picture books, early readers, independent readers, and middle grade ("J" call numbers) are all downstairs in our new children's area (which used to be home to the second halves of our fiction and mystery collections)
  • Reference books are on the second floor in our new conference room

Large print and audiobooks have remained in their spots in the main room, as have most of the DVDs. Non-fiction and biographies also have not moved.

We're still working on signage, and we're going to do a video tour to post to the website soon, but we sincerely hope this will make the collection much more accessible and easier to browse. If you need help finding anything while we all get accustomed to the new arrangement, please feel free to ask!

Upcoming Events

March 7: New Mystery Book Club!

The second meeting of the Thomaston Public Library Mystery Book Club will be held on March 7th at 11 am.  This month we are reading Faith Martin's first book with protagonist Hillary Greene, Murder On the Oxford Canal. DI Hillary Greene is a police woman fighting to save her career.  Her husband a corrupt cop, now deceased, has cast a shadow on her reputation.  Can the investigation of a body found floating in the Oxford Canal help clear her name?  First in the series of crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire, Murder on the Oxford Canal  with its diverse cast of characters is a compelling mystery and will appeal to readers of Ruth Rendell, Colin Dexter and Agatha Christie according to its reviewers.

Light refreshments are served.  All are welcome to join us for this literary trip to Oxford.  For more information, please contact the library.  The next book in the series will be announced at the meeting.

March 11: Family Movie & Pizza Night

Join us at Thomaston Public Library on Monday, March 11 at 5:00 pm for our Family Movie & Pizza Night! Free and open to all, and pajamas are welcome. We're excited to show Disney's Tangled this month!

When the kingdom's most wanted--and most charming--bandit Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he's taken hostage by Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn's curious captor, who's looking for her ticket out of the tower where she's been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. Tangled is a story of adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair.

Tangled is rated PG for "brief mild violence" by the MPAA. All films for Family Movie & Pizza Night are shown with closed captioning for the deaf and hard of hearing.

March 12: Let's Talk About It Book Club

The Let's Talk About It book group will meet on Tuesday, March 12 at 11 am to continue "The Civil War: Fiction" series with Beloved by Toni Morrison. This month, longtime book club member and friend to the library Pam Evans has generously offered to lead the discussion while our usual facilitator, Lee Heffner, is away.

From the publisher:

"Staring unflinchingly into the abyss of slavery, this spellbinding novel transforms history into a story as powerful as Exodus and as intimate as a lullaby. Sethe, its protagonist, was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has too many memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. And Sethe's new home is haunted by the ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Filled with bitter poetry and suspense as taut as a rope, Beloved is a towering achievement."

These discussions are always thought-provoking and lively, and we welcome anyone to join for one book or the whole series! Light refreshments are served. The next book in the series, to be discussed on April 9, will be March by Geraldine Brooks. Copies will be available to borrow at the library. For more information, please contact the library at (207) 354-2453.

March 15: Communi-TEA!

Join us for afternoon tea on March 15 from 3 to 4:30 PM! Delicious treats and hot tea will be served, and all are welcome in the community living room at Thomaston Public Library.

We would also like to encourage folks to support their neighbors by bringing to Communi-TEA a non-perishable food, pet care, or personal care item to donate to the food pantry!

March 19: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday, March 19th at 2:30 pm the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will meet to discuss Persepolis and Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi.

This pair of graphic memoirs depicting the author's youth in Iran during the Islamic
Revolution will be the book club's first reading and discussion of a work in comic format.

From the publisher:

"Persepolis is the story of Satrapi’s unforgettable childhood and coming of age in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming–both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

"Wise, funny, and heartbreaking, Persepolis is a clear-eyed and searing condemnation of the human cost of fundamentalism. In its depiction of the struggles of growing up - here compounded by Marjane's status as an outsider both abroad and at home - it is raw, honest, and incredibly illuminating."

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Library on March 19th at 2:30 p.m. If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

In April, we will be discussing Longbourn by Jo Baker. Copies will be available to borrow at the library.

On Display at the Library

March is Women's History Month

Join us in commemorating works by and about amazing women! Fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children included. This is the perfect time to check out titles by Roxane Gay, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Peggy Orenstein, and more.

Non-Fiction That Reads Like Fiction

When you think of non-fiction, does the word "boring" come to mind? Do you think of heavy volumes of history or dry business books? Check out our display in the reading room of non-fiction books that read like novels. The truth can be stranger than fiction, but it's certainly just as entertaining.

Showcase Space Available

Speaking of displays, you may have noticed that we have a lovely glass display case in our main reading room, and we would love to feature some of our local patrons' talents and interests. If you would be interested in showcasing your work, please contact us for more information!

Bookmobile Home Delivery Service

Some folks may be aware that we offer a Bookmobile Home Delivery Service, but many are not... We have obtained a grant to fund this service for people in Thomaston and some of the surrounding communities who are unable to come to the library due to disability (short- or long-term) or age. We have a new brochure to advertise the Bookmobile available at the library, or we would be happy to email it to anyone who would like a copy. Help us spread the word if you or someone you know is unable to visit us at the library and could benefit from a visit from our Bookmobile!
