You should've seen my face when I was sneaking out of the house for work, early one morning in February. In my bag was a card with my darling wife's handwriting on the front. I opened it up having no idea why I was getting a card. Happy 8th Wedding Anniversary it said inside. Oh dear. I stood there for a few moments trying to remember even

what month we were currently in, let alone what the date was. Anyway, the crisis was averted. A quick google told me the 8th anniversary should be signified by bronze. In no time I whipped up a bag of our finest bronze bushing here at the shop and her gift was ready. Sure, we have no need for bronze bushing at our house but surely it's the lack of thought that counts?

I hope you read about the former Nissan CEO in the above 'further news' section. If you did, you'll know how proud and protective the Japanese are over their manufacturing and image in general. Therefore, movers and shakers in Japan, who have to worry about their public image, opt for Japan's very own ultra-luxury limousine and this is the Century. The quirky Century isn't a Toyota, or even a Lexus, but a standalone single vehicle marque made by the Toyota Company. It is designed as a rolling example of Japanese pride, quality and strength. If it's good enough for Japanese politicians or leading business people, it's good enough for me. Let's check it out!

The first thing that might strike you is the lack of extravagance or opulence but don't be fooled, there's a whole lot of tech hiding everywhere. Also, cloth seats? What? It turns out that while you can buy the Century with leather seating, the Japanese consider this 100% woollen upholstery to be the benchmark in comfort.
|
|
|
It's hard to miss the homage the Century pays to the Rolls Royce phantom, particulary with the grille and especially the C-pillar. Keep in mind though that this vehicle, for sale in Japan only, is priced around $200-250K AUD, about a third of the price of a Rolls Royce Phantom.
|
|
|
You might think the overall aesthetic is nothing to write home about and you're probably right. Did you know the model this latest Century replaced was on sale in Japan for 21 years? Therefore it's important that these designs don't incorporate any fads which will age quickly but rather go for longer lasting classic design.
|
|
|
Look at the back of the front seat where there is a foot rest. What do you notice? That square shape pushes straight through so, wait for it, you can put your legs through the back of the chair and rest your feet on the base of the seat in front of you! Or, if someone is sitting in the seat in front, you can still use the little flip down foot rest like in business class. So I'm told.
